Many bands form, by looking for great players, believing that that will make a competitively superior band, like gladiators thinking survival depends on market dominance—it’s very common. It’s also the approach of most to dampen one’s finger and place it into the air of consumerism to create a product that will sell today, even though styles and trends change daily—again, very common. Both approaches have very little to do with the purpose of music, and why most people listen to music, which is to stir the imagination and the soul; an outlet for feeling—an emotional journey, both highs, and lows—an avenue for fun!
“In Our Dreams” has a very diverse musical background of players. From opening for national, and international bands such as The Smithereens, Pretty Poison, The Slickee Boys, A Flock of Seagulls, Bricklin, Tom Gillam, The Vels, Level 42, and the Edgar Winter Group, to that of Indy Artists, playing some of the largest and loved Rock and Soul Rooms of the northeast, the band is comprised of amazingly versatile and industry respected musically veteran heavyweights.
This band had to happen.
Beginning in the summer of 2010, Guitarist Kork Moyer was looking for work with an established working band, as a “hired gun,” when he received a call from Bassist, Jim Bartolomei to audition for his band. It had been a long time since Kork played covers, and it was with some reservation that he prepared. However, life usually throws you a curve, and this was no different. In the midst of auditioning, it was revealed that the band completely dismantled, and the singer left the planet, leaving the remaining players to form something entirely new, rather than bring in a new guitarist, to quickly learn material and begin again.
Well, the direction of the band began to scatter in unsustainable ways, while it became clear that Jim and Kork found a special fusion of Funk, Soul, and Rock music that became an undeniable passion, leading them to striking out on their own to realize the “Dream,” when Kork phoned up his ole’ band-mate Percussionist, Andrew Kapp.
In the 80’s, Andrew and Kork, along with the late Joey Santagelo, worked together as Atlantic artists Joey Saint & HiFi, an original Blue-Eyed Pop band (achieving a record deal that, fortunately went very sour). The two worked together for many years, both loving urban funk, and now, with the present need for a dynamic drummer with very specific gifts, and after a few measures into a workout, the three knew they had the beginnings of a “Dream.”
After way too long, and growing very weary trying to complete the lineup, Jim was called to work with a tribute side-project, where he met a very unique soul, with very different thoughts and approaches to music and life, keyboardist Ben Lardier. Ben possessed an inexplicable way of fitting himself into any musical accompaniment seemingly effortlessly, and immediately! Jim’s words echo, “I think this is the guy!” He was right!
With backgrounds such as, Jim Bartolomei ‘s years of immersing himself in the funk music of the 60’s and 70’s, such as Tower of Power and Weather Report, to Kork Moyer’s years of arena metal, progressive rock, fusion, funk, and soul music, to Andrew Kapp’s rock, soul, power-pop, and alternative experimental progressive speed metal, and Ben Lardiere’s rock, indy-funk, jazz, and ability to cover every musical styling, these guys can quite literally play anything. They are free to enjoy every musical moment they share—every note is fun!!
With such a rich musical history, diversity and ridiculous sense of humor, they invite their audiences into their fun, in freakishly surprising ways. (I will not spoil it for you… you really need to be part of it…)
STEP INSIDE THE RIDE
The “Dream” is to meld the energy and heaviness of hard rock, with the crisp dance groove of intense funk music; mixing the soft sensitivity of smooth jazz with the soaring heights of progressive music; blending the heartfelt mood of soul, with the freedom of a jam-band. All of this set to the vibe and off-center humor of a vintage carnival ride!
The result is “In Our Dreams,” where imagination, feelings, fun, and yes, GREAT MUSICIANSHIP all converge for a moving, musical evening.
