ISpaceWalkSometimes is a band of talented young musicians from New York who joined together in 2010 to create original music based on a unique blend of many genres of music such as Metal, Progressive, Alternative, Ska, and Pop rock. The band consists of Lead Vocalist Sparrow Boe, Guitarist John Benoit, Guitarist Conor McGillicuddy, Bassist Sam Starobin, and Drummer Chris Drago.
John is the primary music writer, and he traces his musical influence to the band Coheed and Cambria, and artist Frank Zappa. Many of the vocal melodies written by Chris Drago resemble the vocal lines of Emarosa, while Sparrow Boe has a vocal style similar to that of Paramore's Hayley Williams. The pounding bass grooves of Sam Starobin are influenced by the work of Tool. Conor keeps the style of Frank Zappa and The Strokes in mind when creating his rhythmic guitar figures. With this interesting combination of musical styles, ISpaceWalkSometimes maintains a fresh and diverse sound.
Together, the band has played venues all over the Tri-State area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. They participated in the Next Big Thing Tour in December, 2011 at The Studio at Webster Hall, NYC. They performed at a benefit concert at Asbury Lanes in New Jersey, and they played at The Loft at The Chance Theater in Westchester. They’ve also frequently played The Room in Brookfield, CT. As individuals associated with the School of Rock, they’ve performed at such venues as New York City’s Blender Theater at Gramercy and The Highline Ballroom. John toured the East Coast with the School of Rock All-Stars the summer of 2011 while Sam performed in Edinburg, Scotland at the Fringe Festival.
When meeting the members of ISWS, one will first notice their easy, friendly and approachable manner. They are extremely supportive of each other, and they are quick to support the bands they play with on stage. Their maturity as individuals and musicians is evident both onstage and off. The main focus of ISpaceWalkSometimes is to create original music that they love, and that others will love it too.
Meet Sparrow: Sparrow Boe has trained in voice lessons for the past four years, most prominently working with Kat Calvosa. She recorded her first acoustic single at age twelve, and her second at age thirteen. She’s no stranger to the stage as she performed at various venues all over NYC, Long Island and Westchester. At that time, her musical interests were focused on more acoustic sounds. She then joined the School of Rock performances for a year, which is where she met Chris and John. After that, her interests began to lean towards a rock sound, and she auditioned for ISpaceWalkSometimes. Sparrow’s style of lyrics and vocals help to create ISWS’ unique and powerful sound.
Meet John: John Benoit is the mastermind behind the music ISpaceWalkSometimes creates, and he loves nothing more than seeing the music in his head come to life. He received his formal training and touring experience through the School of Rock, (John is an SOR All-Star,) but he prefers to teach himself the ins and outs of music. His writing is influenced by the musical genius of Guthrie Govan, Randy Rhoads and Frank Zappa.
Meet Conor: Conor embarked on his musical journey in the fifth grade with a mandatory focus on the trumpet. Conor soon appreciated the rock music around him and became inspired by such bands as ACDC, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin to pick up the guitar by the end of fifth grade. Conor received his first electric guitar in May of 2008. He played extensively with his cousin and later band member John Benoit. With a ragtag group labeled as "Funky Parrot", the duo put together a small collection of simple songs featuring a single guitar and a single bass. In 2009, Conor practiced with "Shock Collar," a Thrash Metal band started by John Benoit and Chris Drago that evolved into ISWS with the addition of Sam and Sparrow. Conor draws all of his influence and motivation from the musical works of artist Frank Zappa.
Meet Sam: Sam Starobin has been playing music since the age of five starting with piano. Sam picked up the bass at age 13 and has never looked back. He spent two years at School of Rock Westchester where he met John and Chris and the rest is history. Sam has performed in Edinburg, Scotland at the Fringe Festival and he currently studies with Gregory Chudzik. Sam’s musical influences include Porcupine Tree, Symphony X, Tool, Fear Factory, Disturbed and System of a Down.
Meet Chris: Chris Drago demonstrated his love of music at the age of two when he used to sit with his uncle at the piano and try to imitate the sounds. He began piano lessons at the age of five and soon learned to play the guitar, violin, and bass. At the age of ten, he discovered his passion for the drums, and the drum kit became his dominant instrument. He joined the School of Rock at age 11 and was trained by Lou Caldarola for three years. He spent the summer after his Freshman year at the Berklee School of Music, exploring diverse drumming styles such as Funk and Fusion. He currently studies with Brian Adler. Chris’ current main musical influences are Coheed & Cambria, Sleeping with Sirens, 311, and Emarosa. Drummers that inspire him include Lukas Koszewski, Gabe Barham, Chad Sexton and Josh Eppard.
