Chris Smith is a singer/songwriter based in the mountains of Western NC. He's played in various bands over the years, but he's been playing mostly solo shows since 2012. Chris began writing songs at the age of 14, and picked up his first guitar shortly thereafter. By 18 he was playing a lot of the local pubs and clubs in his hometown of Johnson City, TN. In 2003 Chris moved to Asheville, NC to pursue his music further and he's still going strong, performing over 100 shows a year. Chris was the founding member of Hendersonville, NC based Roots/Country band Cosmic Creek for nearly four years before deciding to go solo. His style has been compared to the likes of Lyle Lovett, Townes Van Zandt, and Jason Isbell to name a few.
"In his debut release Love & War, singer/songwriter Chris Smith brings a fresh, distinctive sound from an old country barroom in a southern ghost town. He conjures up the ghosts of Townes Van Zandt, Gram Parsons, and a number of other sweet but not forgotten spirits. The lyrics are raw, honest, and meet the rural, blue collar family for dinner. Smith is armed with an acoustic guitar and his licks are often dark, abstinent, and bring a solemn feeling of sobriety to an otherwise lively celebration. His songs evoke warmth and distance at the same time, entrapping the audience between lost love and the luxury of hell bent solitude. There is a spiritual cry throughout most of the record that leaves the listener seeking morality in a forgotten desert. A must for anyone who loves the sound of solo alt country mixed with the rigorous self-discipline of a small town reprobate."
