Susan (Fisher) Wright / Bio

Susan (Fisher) Wright Bio

• Occupation: full time public school music teacher, J. V. Forrestal Elementary School, Beacon, NY
• Past occupation: Recording Engineer, NYC
• Songwriting highlight: writing “Sybil Ludington”, suggested to me by Pete Seeger, based on the real-life adventure of a 16-year-old Revolutionary War heroine from Carmel, NY. When Pete found out where I live, he mentioned the statue of Sybil and said “Someone should write a song about her.” So I did, then sent it to Pete who sent it back to me with corrections in red pen. He also wrote an additional verse (the one about riding sidesaddle).
• Performing highlights: Helping Pete Seeger organize the “Spirit of Beacon Singalong” and playing in the streets of Beacon with him, conducting Pete, the Vanaver Caravan, and 300 third grade students singing at the conclusion of the Calico Ball (these past 5 years, hopefully to continue depending on how Pete feels), playing my music with Hope Machine (Fred Gillen, Steve Kirkman, and Eric Puente). Hope Machine really brings something special to my songs

I was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and grew up in Peekskill, NY. I learned piano from my mother Audrey Fisher, my aunt and grandmother, and the wonderful Thom Piliouras, music teacher at Peekskill High School. I attended SUNY Fredonia in the 80’s, majoring in Sound Recording Technology.

I became a recording engineer in NYC in the 80’s, recording for Broadway shows, museum installations, bands, and many other projects, the most well-known being De La Soul’s “Three Feet High and Rising” in which I was the track recording engineer and also the mysterious “Sue-in-the-House” at the end of “Potholes in My Lawn”.

Then I was married, beautiful daughters were born and I got my Masters in Music Education. First I taught college, kindergarten, and private lessons and now am happily teaching full time in the Beacon City School District elementary band, chorus, and general music at J. V. Forrestal Elementary School. In Beacon, I made many friends including Pete Seeger, who still visits my classroom to enjoy music with me and my students. I have published articles in “Teaching Music” and “SingOut!” magazines about special times with Pete.

I hope to share some of the people I met along the way with you in my songs. One musician I respect (out of too many to name!) is Alan Toussaint who once said: “People first, music second!”. I believe that music should be a shared experience, and the best music brings the audience and performers together. The best music makes everyone feel included.
