The band in their present form got together back in July 2010. Lucy, Karl and Denise brought with them over 40 years each of performing and recording music, both professionally and for the sheer love of it. What they discovered when all three first got together, was a beautiful, colourful and unique blend of their voices. "Like a perfectly tuned drum" From then on, we each went in search for songs to bring out that blend - from an old barbershop arrangement of 'Carry Me Back To Old Virginny' to the much more recent and haunting Gillian Welch song 'Caleb Meyer'.
Future plans include writing more of their own songs and forming their own independent record label.
Lucy plays a host of stringed instruments together with accordion and hails from the famous Rubber Records stable of artists in Newcastle that introduced Alan Hull and Brethren (later Lindisfarne), Trilogy (later Prelude), Hedgehog Pie, Pete Scott, The Callies (with Bill Mitchell) Tony Capstick, Mike Harding and many others. On a promotional tour in 1972, she performed at London's world famous Marquee club. Lucy has recorded and worked closely with many of Newcastle's finest, and is in constant demand for her "clawhammer" banjo playing ability. She's also got an unusually wide vocal range with it's own sweet character.
Karl plays bass, arranges any harmonies that don't fall naturally and produces all the tracks you hear. He turned professional around 1971 and worked around Britain in groups including a very unusual and zany Mutton Chop Banjo Band. It was while he was with this group that he developed his love for the Boswell Sisters and vintage 1930's music.
Denise is the hidden gem. Her vocal ability has simply astonished the privileged few that have had the pleasure of listening to her over the years. "Bluesy" "Gutsy" "So gentle and dramatic in her special way, she can bring that shiver down your spine" are just a few comments made about her style of singing. Denise is our lead vocalist and plays ukulele.
