Well hello, didn't see you standing there. My name is Jen Hodges. I play bass guitar, and I write songs. If you're one of those people who reads bios before listening to music, I suppose I will attempt to describe what type of music I write.
I have been playing in bands all my life. First a classic rock type band, then a grunge band, then a punk band, then a rock band, then a hip-hop band. I had a blast in every band I've played with, but I had this little itch that eventually grew into a giant bloody tumor about me wanting to write and perform whatever kind of music I damn well felt like.
Now I feel I must explain why I chose to take a completely self-indulgent route and call this project "Jen Hodges and Spurge." Every band I've been in I've always got special attention. It's very flattering, and I am grateful; but it's always been a trifle awkward for me. Also, the way I play bass is more of a lead style than traditional bass playing. It's just how it flows for me. Therefore, I decided to take these three factors and choose a course of action that fits the situation. If you've forgotten these factors, I shall refresh your memory.
1. I want to write and perform whatever genre of music I want.
2. I seem to get singled out with groups I perform in.
3. I play bass in a lead style.
Spurge is a weed reference. Look it up.
My band is wonderful and you should hire them for your various endeavors. Hit me up to learn how to contact them. Rashaun has been playing drums since age 3, Thomas graduated from Vanderbilt with a music degree and has been playing multi-instruments since age 5, and Alex has been playing since age 12.
Get it? Awesome.
Now if you want to know a little bit more about me. I started taking piano at age 7. It bored me. I heard Flea. Fell in love with bass. Begged parents to buy me a bass. Got a right handed bass. Learned bass right handed. Gigged in high school. Graduated from Berklee. Moved to L.A. Moved to Nashville. There you go :)
If you like it, please tell your friends about it.
Enjoy the tunes!
