Born in Germany in 1984, and playing piano since the age of 4, Thomas Kinzel has developed a special passion for all forms of music. After studying classical for a short period of time, Thomas went on to study jazz with renowned pianist and music teacher Phil Newns, his mentor since the age of 6.
Thomas’s career however wouldn’t start in the music industry. After a short time working as a commercial pilot and flight instructor, he came to the realization that he couldn’t live without music, so he gave up flying and pursued his passion.
Arranging and recording his own compositions since his mid teens, led Thomas towards a love for the studio, and he soon became a session musician and apprentice at Vancouver Islands Woodshop Studio, run by the ever so talented Zak Cohen.
His song writing and production talents soon payed off when in 2008, Thomas was part of the top 10 of 15,000 contestants nation wide, to write the new CBC Hockey Night in Canada theme song.
As a live player, Thomas has had, and continues to have, the privilege of working with some of the best musicians in the industry. Saxophonist Paul Wainwright gave Thomas one of his first opportunities to learn and grow as a professional musician under his guidance and attention to detail, both on and off the stage. They would later release the album “Midnight Café”.
As well as his time in the studio, Thomas is currently one of the most in demand keyboardists in Victoria BC. Some of his main projects include playing with:
