Teenage singer songwriter and actress Meredith O’Connor announces her new single “Just the
Thing”, which will officially release on iTunes on April 22, 2014. 75% of proceeds from the single
will go to two mothers fighting cancer: Cathy Marino, a 36 year old single mother of a 7 year old
daughter and Diana Polanco, a mother and grandmother who takes care of both her daughter
and granddaughter. Meaningful lyrics, a catchy melody, and a powerful message about not
fitting in with the “popular crowd” are a consistent theme throughout Meredith’s songs. Co-written
by legendary songwriter/producer Heather Holley, who has produced songs for the likes of
Christina Aguilera, “Just the Thing” blends a bit of country and rock to create this edgy pop song.
Growing up in New York, Meredith was ostracized for her passions and for being herself, and
now she uses her music to spread awareness about bullying. She does speaking engagements
for groups of young people, sharing her music and her story, and encourages teens to be
inclusive and tolerant of one another’s differences. She is a member of the It Gets Better Project,
a well known nonprofit organization that supports bullied youth, and is an official advisor for the
Reach Out, a nonprofit
organization whose mission is to stop bullying in schools.
“‘Just the Thing’ is about how you should love yourself for who you are, and it’s okay to be
different,” Meredith explains. “Standing out is a good thing that people will love at the end of the
The proceeds from the single will be going to the Carol Galvin Foundation that is currently
supporting two women battling cancer. Cathy Marino was diagnosed with lung and breast cancer
and has had two heart surgeries just this past year. Diana Polanco takes care of her family in
Florida while her husband works in New York trying to pay all the bills. Meredith came across
these two women and was so touched by their stories that she decided to help by contributing a
majority of the proceeds from her single sales. She was named spokesperson of The Carol
Galvin Foundation in January of 2014 and performed at the foundation’s first fundraiser earlier
this year in Nyack, NY and is slated to perform at their upcoming fundraiser on May 15th. "As a
preteen, I modeled for runway fashion and print, which led me to meet my manager, Rick Galvin,
the head of the Carol Galvin Foundation, at a charity event. The organization means so much to
so many people, and I am more than happy to finally tie my music in with the foundation’s
More About Meredith O’Connor
Trained in classical, Broadway, and pop vocals, Meredith honed her acting and dance skills in a
number of theater troupes, performing in professional and local productions such as Annie,
Grease, and Once on this Island, Jr.. Her popularity continued to grow through her YouTube hit
single “Celebrity”, which garnered more than two million views to date. Her second single, “The
Game” was written specifically to address bullying and was composed to touch the lives of
young individuals, which consequently created a strong fanbase for Meredith. The song will be
featured in the upcoming indie horror flick Red Head Randy, in which she has a starring role.
In 2013, Meredith began a ten-city tour in conjunction with the release of her video for "The
Game". During this nationwide tour, Meredith and her team performed for thousands of young
people in their schools, taking questions, signing autographs, and encouraging the victims of
bullying to stay strong. Although she regularly receives hundreds of messages from her fans,
Meredith still finds time to answer most of them personally, and she remains a source of
strength and inspiration to youth who have been bullied. In addition, Meredith has performed at
various venues in Nashville, including the famous Orchid Lounge and in New York City, including
the prestigious Highline Ballroom last November.
