Hey, thanks for visiting my page. I've been playing the drums since I was a kid growing up in the 70's. Born and raised in Toronto. I taught myself how to play on my older brother's kit when he wasn't home. He was a big Prog Rock fan with a massive vinyl collection and subjected me to all that great music at an early age. I was a trumpet player and started playing the Horn in grade 5. I played the Trumpet, Sax and Drums during my High School Years and sat in with the School Band. I gave up the horns when I graduated High School and focused my attention to the drums. No lessons or formal training, just a lot of blood, sweat and tears in the basement! I bought a Monster 1977 Gretsch USA Custom from Steve's in the late 80's. Wow! Yes, a vintage Gretsch kit is all that! My chops were at their peak when I was in my early 20's and I was playing all the crazy Prog, Jazz, Fusion, Funk, etc. of the day with ease. Alas, "life is what happens while you're busy making plans" and drumming took a back seat to my family and career. I sold that beautiful Gretsch in '95. Parting with that kit was like losing a limb! I didn't pick up a pair of sticks for several years afterwards. I bought a vintage 7-piece Premier kit in 2000 and started playing again. I still didn't have the time to be a "working player" but at least I had a kit in the basement! After several years of basement jams and playing for fun, I got the urge to kick it up a notch and started playing local gigs in 2009 with "The B.K.Smith Band" and "The Blue Green Perspective" aka "The Radio Daredevils". I'm currently playing with "The Weathered Kings" (www.weatheredkings.ca) and I'm having lots of fun making some music with this great bunch of guys! I'm also doing some session work and side-projects with my fellow band mates and other local musicians. No delusions of grandeur here - I'm just having some fun playing and gigging with my buddies. Isn't that what it's all about? After 12 years and hundreds of gigs, I'm still pounding on that 25 year old Work Horse of a Premier! It's a 1st Gen. XPK with Birch/Merranti Shells finished in "Blackwood" lacquer - 8",10",12",13",16" Power Toms, 22"x18" Kick with a 14"x6" Premier Signia Marquis Maple and a 14"x8" Premier Birch 2005 as my 2 main Snares - all hand made in England. Great Bang for your buck and very underrated here in North America! I like to be different and not too many drummers play Premier these days. Given the choice, I'll take my old Gretsch USA Custom - want to lend me some money for a new one? You know what you can do with any mass-produced Made in China kit! I play Zildjian cymbals - 20" A Custom Ride, 18" A Medium Thin Brilliant Crash, 16" A Custom Projection Crash, 10" A Custom Splash, 13" and 14" New Beat Hats, 22" Oriental China Trash and a 20" China High. I also have a Roland TD-8 which I use for practice, rehearsals and smaller gigs. The posted tracks were recorded live at some recent club gigs using a Zoom H2 recorder without drum mics or any mastering so sound quality isn't great. I'll be posting more in the near future. Thanks for stopping by. Cheers, Dan.
