One sweltering night long ago, Rhonda Wall, known as RJ at the time, was rocking the Red Hot Blues Room on N Market St. At the end of the show the capacity crowd began to chant:" Momma! Momma ! Momma! " The name stuck and she is indeed the matriarch of a musical family that includes her husband of 39 years, Poppa DuPree on guitar, their son JoJo Wall on bass, vocals ,and harp, Big Daddy Dale Roberson on Hammond organ and piano, and Richard "Hook" Hudson on drums.
Momma and the Redemption have deep roots in the Low Country. Momma hails from San Diego and Poppa was raised in Charleston. They met while Poppa was touring with a rock band, and she came to their show in Winston Salem, NC. Six weeks later they married. That was nearly 39 years ago.
After Poppa learned entirely by accident that his beautiful bride could belt it out , he put a band behind her. Three days later she took the stage for the first time and the rest is history! One still being written. JoJo joined the family on stage at the age of 17. For over three decades they have rocked venues large and small and even run their own club. Momma's Blues Palace was voted "Best Of Charleston" every year it was open. Momma was also vocalist of the year several times in the Charleston Music Awards.
Over the years Momma has had many great bands, but the addition of Big Daddy Dale, and Hook makes this her best crew ever. Dale has played around the area for decades. He is one of the most enthusiastic, energetic and talented musicians any where. Although Momma, Poppa , and Dale all reside in the rural community of Cross, they didn't meet until one year ago at a jam in Eutawville. The chemistry, musical and personal, was immediate, and Dale truly is family. Hook was the last piece of the puzzle. Dale invited him to a jam, and his skills were crazy! He is also a good man, and now Hook is family. His style is a perfect fit.
