Alien Knife Fight are the creative duo of bassist/vocalist Monique Ortiz and bassist/drummer Michael Howard. Based in the junction town of Creedmoor, Texas, AKF produce music, video and visual art at all hours in their home studio Big Bottom Farm. Monique is best known for her collaborations with members of the band Morphine, which include A.K.A.C.O.D. (with saxophonist Dana Colley), and Bourbon Princess (with drummer Jerome Deupree). Michael Howard is known for his bass playing in hard rock outfit Bay Of Pigs.
Monique and Mike typically perform live as a duo, armed with nothing but a 2-string slide bass, fretless bass, and drums. Occasionally they bring a variety of guest musicians into the studio or to sit-in on shows. Past players include bassist/saxophonist Brad Houser (Dead Kenny G's), saxophonist Justin Williams (Ghostmember), and bassist/vocalist John Aymong.
Generally speaking, Alien Knife Fight are a rock duo with a sound larger than what their live audiences expect. If hash tags are the way people label music these days it may be worth noting that AKF are frequently tagged by fans as #slidepunk, #gothicblues . The duo's influences include: Gary Numan, Wire, QOSTA, Nina Simone, Mark Lanegan, Joy Division, early Judas Priest, Nick Drake. Confused yet? Don't be. Just come to a show.
Currently Mike and Monique are working on the full-length Alien Knife Fight record. They released a 5-song EP in 2014.
