Back Porch Pickers is a 5 piece acoustic outfit from Tempe, Arizona that has their roots firmly planted deep in down-home acoustic music. Singing songs from past and present, Back Porch seems to create a timeless aspect in their music.
The Back Porch sound is derived from a combination of bluegrass, newgrass, jam, jazz, folk and rock genres. The band seemingly uses them all to blend together a sound that is all their own..
Live performances includes tight, melodic compositions as well as improvisational interludes where the band can showcase their prolific musicality. By not limiting themselves to one genre and being equipped with acoustic instrumentation, percussion and vocal harmonies, the Pickers are able to cross many different genres to give the listener a wide selection of material to choose from.
With a new year and a new lineup, BPP is optimistic of what the future holds.
Back Porch Pickers was originally known as "PTD Factor" when Pete,Tony, and Dave formed the group in January of 2010. When the band decided to change names, they wanted to pay tribute and honor all the Parking Lot Pickers that came before them. That is how Back Porch Pickers was born.
Back in 1998, Pete Phimphavong and Tony Furiga met and started performing together in various projects and a lifelong friendship was started. This explains how the two were able to create such a very tight musical union between the banjo and guitar.
In October of 2012, original bassist Dave Nanni decided to leave the band. This left a big hole for BPP to fill. The band picked up Jason Kerr on bass and John Rumbaugh on percussion from the band "Mule Deer" to fill in this void and played with this lineup until Aug of 2013. After that date, the band was fortunate enough to obtain Tony's brother Nathan Furiga on bass and Bernie Lemieux on percussion. Both of them played with Pete and Tony in the Highgrass Pickers many years prior to rejoining forces in Back Porch. The band also added the rhythm guitar of Brian Bergeron to the mix to fatten up their already unique sound.
With the addition of Nathan, Brian, and Bernie, Back Porch found their rhythm section and a solid foundation for the banjo and guitar to intertwine. With a no holds barred approach to their music and their willingness to bring it all out, the sky's the limit for this band.
