Darren Borror - Percussionist / Bio

At 3 years old, I got my first kit at Christmas time!! My dad, a very versatile player at almost anything he touched, had a very influential impact on my musical career.

I grew up not letting it out of the bag that I could even play them. My friends didn't even know. I jumped right into the school band in 6th grade (supposed to start in 5th, but I didn't..... kinda shy back then) playing Trumpet. I so wanted to play for Chicago, K.C. & the Sunshine Band, The Association .... that was my desire!! By the end of 6th grade I had made my way to 3rd seat trumpet. Long story short, I ended up leaving that seat to play Sousaphone for the band, I went straight to #1 seat by end of 8th grade. In high school, it didn't take me long to reclaim that seat. But I couldn't help myself when I would break out the sticks when I was alone and play my heart out on the drums!! Even my band director didn't even know!!

It was 10th grade, I was at Jazz/Party Band practice, and our drummer had not shown up yet and we were ready to start. We broke out the sheet music to 25 or 6 to 4 by Chicago. I managed my way to our drummers monster 12 pc Ludwig drum kit, and began to play with the band. The group, AND my instructor, were in awe!! And I was laughing!! I had played that song so many times on a kit, and only I knew about it. That would be the only time I would play drums for the rest of my High School years.

After graduation, I jumped right into the kit. My 2nd kit was a Ludwig Vistalite clear blue 5 piece. Playing with Glory Land Express, I traveled all over Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky and parts of Tennessee.

After changes in the band, and everyone getting married and moving on, times changed for me.

Jumping right into a band called Highway 40, I hit the scene playing Country and 50-60's RNR. (This is a band I am recently re-grouping with) Long story short, 3 + years; health issues from some of the band members caused the last show to happen in 1990.

Not wanting to stay off the kit, I ran into Dennis. A brother of a guy my sister was dating who was wanting to pursue starting a band. And so we did!! 6 months of hard work, opening for Ohio acts Hilljack, GODZ & American Dog, Smugglin' Yo-Yo's was born. I was with that group for most of the 90's. Then life changes and I was on the search again.

Took a little time off. Tried several bands; Blind Side, Double Shot, Mad River Band, Dancing Madly Backwards-just to name a few!! But for some reason or another ... the bands just couldn't keep it together.

So I took a break. I did some open jams and fill-ins on occasion. But I didn't have the heart to get back in full time.

The itch just won't go away and the desire to give it a shot has become me. So I have ran into a group who has been trying to get off the ground for some time now. A great group of people. Awesome song lists, ideas ... but things are getting in the way. Personal issues have kept this band from fully getting off the ground, and still working on it. We'll see.

But now I've been invited by my old band Highway 40 to do a New Year’s Gig coming up. And I've jumped on board!! It is sad that one of our band mates has passed away and another has health issues so we've lost him. We've picked up a new Bass player and 3 of the original 5 are back in business!!

I am looking forward to getting back in front of my fans, old and new!! And anxious to see what this round will bring me, whether with these bands or another. Time will tell.

As for my dad, his alcoholism got the best of him. He left me and 3 siblings when I was 5 to never see or talk to again. He passed in 2003 ... I never got the chance to ever play music with him. That was the part that influenced me in my music. I made an oath to myself and GOD that I would never let that lifesyle cause me to not be able to enjoy this part of my life with my partner or my, now 2, children ... whom are both musically gifted!!

Pro Drummer, with Pro Attitude, Pro Equipment and all around fun guy!! No alcohol, drugs or drama. That is ME.

The Yo-Yo's picked up part of my saying. I never claimed to be good, I just like to play!! And play I will!!

Hope to see you at a show soon!!
