Joe Gee's been around, geographically and musically. Grew up by the beach on Long Island, NY, lived in Seattle, Baltimore, Charlotte, and, for now and forever, in Austin, Texas. Joe started playing piano at eight and guitar at ten. Over the years he's worked in rock/R&B bands as a keyboardist and lead singer, as a jazz pianist/vocalist, and in country bands. Through it all he has continued developing his version of American roots music, singing, playing and writing that draws from all corners of the American popular music world. No wonder his music brings to mind the work of so many diverse artists - Tom Waits, John Prine, and Fred Eaglesmith, to name but a few.
Joe's debut Americana/Roots CD, "Gee Joe" was released on the Fourth of July, 2006. He enlisted several roots music standouts to contribute to this project, including the amazing guitarist Redd Volkaert, Noel McKay of The McKay Brothers, Dan Walsh, dobro and guitar wizard and former member of Fred Eaglesmith's band, and the late, great Harry Kleintank on tenor and soprano saxes. The CD, self- produced and recorded at Austin’s legendary Flashpoint Studio and mastered by Jerry Tubb at Terra Nova Studios in Austin, is a collection if Joe's own compositions, collaborations (including 'There Ain''t Nothing Wrong', co-written with Paul Thorn), and several covers of songs by some of Joe's favorite writers. It has been well-received and has been the topic of several glowing reviews.
His latest Americana release, "Live In Vermont" contains fifteen tracks culled from two performances from the Roots on the River Festival in Bellows Falls, VT, 2007. Joe is currently recording his next release, slated for spring 2012.
Joe is constantly performing, either around the Austin Metro region or at festivals and venues throughout N. America. He has appeared at many festivals in recent years including, among others, Cicadafest, Saint Catharine's, ON, CA - 2009 & 2010, The Fred Eaglesmith Charity Picnic, Aylmer, Ontario, CA (as a solo performer, as guitarist for Audrey Auld Mezera, and as emcee - 2005 & 2008)), Roots on The River, Bellows Falls, VT (solo and emcee - 2006, 2007, & 2011), Fred Eaglesmith TX Weekend (solo in 2006 and emcee in 2007) ,The Downeast Picnic, New Brunswick, Canada (as a solo performer, emcee, and keyboardist in Fred Eaglesmith's band - 2007 & 2008), The Woody Guthrie Folk Festival, Okemah, OK (solo act - 2007), The Great Northern Picnic, Cobalt, Ontario, Canada (as a solo act, with a band, and as emcee (2006 & 2007), and the Baby Boomers Reunion, Bohemia, NY (2011). In adition, Joe's a member of The Judith Miller Band, a swingin', bluesy jazz combo that plays throughout the Texas Hill Country on a regular basis.
Whether close to home or at some far-off (and often far-out) venue, Joe always delivers an energetic and entertaining mix of rootsy country-soul-folk-blues-rock that's sometimes funny, sometimes touching, sometimes rocking, always heartfelt, real, and true. Memorable shows that leave you with the feeling that "nobody is more into it than that guy!"
