Charismatic, Powerful, Fun are words that come to mind when the name Z Strain is heard. Together only a few years, Z Strain has made quite a name for themselves. Combining the best of Funk, Psychedelic, Metal, Jazz, Soul, and just pure adrenaline fueled rock-n-roll, Z Strain takes the lead as the Modesto area’s most eclectic group. Once described as Primus meets Zappa, Z Strain gains more notoriety with every show they play, “it is truly a band that must be experienced live” (Reality Check TV). Their self titled debut album features a wide-array of musical expression - sure to please even the harshest critic.
Solo Bass Jake and Drew Blum are the mind, body, and spirit of Z Strain. Coming from similar rock backgrounds, the duo have been making music together since 2008. The name ‘Solo Bass’ is his self-chosen designation for good reason, he wanted the music world to think of him whenever the words Solo Bass were spoken. He primarily is known for his funky slap playing, and unusually alluring stage presence; however, Jake also employs certain right hand technique that is uncommon, yet spectacular. Only a few have tried, many have failed, Jake uses the ‘double-thumb’ technique to play fast linear lines – when mixed with the complex slap method, it creates an eargasm of funkadelic brilliance.
Drummer JoJo Jorgensen brings a certain pizzazz and flair that can only be topped by his amazing sense of rhythm. Joining the band when he was only 17 years old, JoJo had experience with a wide array of different musical styles. He was a regular percussionist with the late-great Ernie Bucio’s “Little-Big-Band,” and through the different styles of Jazz, Latin-Jazz, and Fusion learned there, he proverbially ‘cut his teeth’ for higher endeavors. Playing with a variety of different bands, JoJo seemed to ping pong through the music scene. When a family friend; Drew Blum, was looking for a drummer for his group JoJo decided to help his friend out, this was the beginning of a stellar musical companionship. JoJo played with Blum’s trio for a few years, at the same time Drew was playing with the power-trio Z Strain. As soon as the previous drummer had to leave for personal reasons, Blum knew who would fill his shoes. Jo Jo’s frantic energy and stage flair forced the band to switch into high gear.
Grafting the musical intricacies together, Drew Blum takes the chaos from the metal drumming and slap bass, and molds them into the Z Strain sound. Where others have tried and failed, Drew might be the only guitarist that is capable of taming the funky wildfire that is Solo Bass Jake. Drew has been playing professionally, and writing original compositions since he was 12 years old. Over the years, he developed his improvisational skills on clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, flute, drums, guitar and other instruments. His instrumental skills led way to songwriting. He soon formed a rock-jazz-fusion band featuring all original music and atypical instrumentation. Blum branched out so far into avant-garde forms of melody and harmony that there was only one other musician that wanted to work with him, Solo Bass Jake.
Together they bring the tenacity, resolve, and spontaneity that is Z Strain. There is no other band that delivers the musical and visual satisfaction that Z Strain does. One listen and you can’t help but tap your foot, bob your head, and play that air guitar. Music is meant to be listened to, and Z Strain creates music that can’t be ignored. Listen……..they will invade your brain !
