Hi. I'm Daniel. I play the violin and I sing. This is my Reverb Nation page and you are reading my Reverb Nation bio.
After spending the better part of the last 10 years on the road playing in bands I loved - St. Vincent, Other Lives, The Rosebuds, Broken Social Scene, The Polyphonic Spree, John Vanderslice - I decided it was time to make a solo record.
This new record is called The Orientalist. Like those 19th Century painters who called themselves by that same name, I have been fascinated with foreign culture, especially Asian culture, for a long time now. And I've had the good fortune to travel throughout India and China many times in the last few years, studying music and language and poetry, playing shows, meeting lots of amazing people and eating lots of amazing food, having new adventures every day and loving it intensely.
So I tried to make a record about those travels, a musical diary of some kind. In the end, I made a record about my obsessions: Bollywood film stars, ex-girlfriends, women I tried to date, women I wish I'd had the nerve to try to date, books like God of Small Things or Life of Pi, anything involving sitars and sarangis...you know, the usual stuff.
And so, in that sense, I think I ended up like those painters: depicting this foreign world in a fantastical way, songs more about my dreams of what it's like than the reality, songs that casually involve sitars and sarangis, songs that obsess over my obsessions...but love songs, nonetheless.
