Love, loss, heartbreak, whiskey...all the elements of great bluegrass. The 14 original songs (and one traditional, for the purists) on By & By’s first album, “Get It While You Can,” take on themes modern and classic, all with tight vocal harmony.
Some of the songs are inspired by personal stories, like a toddler’s tantrum (“Ella’s Meltdown”) and a first meeting (“Yellow Bouquet”). Others speak to larger issues—“No Matter Where I Go” is from the perspective of an immigrant finding a place in the American landscape, and “Left Trembling In The Wind” is a look at a recent national tragedy. By & By also loves a good story, and sings about the last strains of a desperate man (“I Won’t Make A Sound”), love and betrayal (“Morning Train”), and finding solace in unhealthy places (“Only Whiskey”).
As a band, By & By has been growing over the last few years, playing regularly around the DC area. The band won the 2012 DC Bluegrass Union Band completion, and was invited in March 2013 to perform at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage. Each member comes from a different professional background – lawyer, professor, business owner, social worker, scientist, and writer – but they share a love of great music and playing together.
