Presence was formed around 1989. It consisted of Chris Shakenbauer on vocals, JJ Mann on Bass, Dave Knoall on Guitar and Steve DiFranco on Drums.
Chris was a Penthouse Photographer back in those days. I met him through an add in the Melody Maker and was told to check out the band in that months issue of Penthouse. His girlfriend Vicki was "Pet of the Month."
Chris, Dave, JJ and myself rehearsed in some dive studio at the back of St.Pancreas train station in London. One of the tracks above is a 4Track recording of us rehearsing for the studio album.
We recorded this "tape" in a single car garage on a 16 track studio. It was cramped and you can actually hear the guitars making the snares buzz, especially on "Ashes for the Gloss"
Chris would go all over London asking people to play on the album, he was very persuasive. He got the legendary PP Arnold to sing. PP Arnold played with Ike and Tina Turner,The Stones, Hendrix Pink Floyd and many more. I recently contacted PP, she had never heard the album, she loved it. I actually set about finding more people, including Sally Ann Triplett, who now stars in the lead role of Mama Mia in London's West End.
Chris also got Gary Barnacle and the Phantom Horns to play. The Phantom Horns hold the record for being in the British Charts for 13 years.
We were very close to being signed when one day Chris never showed for rehearsal. We went to his home in Queens Park to find it completely empty of furniture, we never saw him again. Later we found out he had joined Scientology and moved to LA. He is now in the Porn Movie Industry. I cannot find JJ, I think he married a Swedish girl called Marina. Dave and myself are in contact, he lives in New York, and still records. The only thing I have is this great set of songs on an old TDK C90 and a bunch of pictures.
