The name Obolus comes from ancient Greek and Roman traditions. It refers to a coin places in or on the mouth of a dead person before they are buried. This coin is intended as payment to the ferryman who conveys souls across the river dividing the world of the living from the world of the dead.
The earliest beginnings of Obolus started With a few locals bands in the late 90's and early 2000's which eventually lead to the formation of a band called Ex Animis Mortuum in 2007. After many lineup changes and much deliberation playing local shows Ex Animis Mortuum eventually went on hiatus for a few years due to a number of different adversities. Being that the original lineup had changed drastically and the difference in the sound of the new material, the decision was made to begin again with a new name.
