Dedicated to bringing you back to the rock and roll we all know and love!
Touch of Rust was born in the winter of 2009. With a shared passion for classic rock and the desire to jam, this group is sure to please even the most skeptical of fans. We have evolved from playing for family and friends to performing for capacity crowds at premier hot spots throughout the greater Twin Cities area. We enjoy the special events gigs just as much as the nightclub scene and hope to continue to play what our fans love to hear. Thanks for stopping by- now sit back, relax and enjoy the music!
Mike is a self taught guitarist from his early teens. Mike’s father, also a guitar player taught him the first 3 cords that it took to get him to this point. Mike is heavily influenced by old blues musicians as well as Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix but mostly by his influenced by his father. Mike played along side of Todd Hamann in a High School Variety Show and the friendship continues to grow along with their collective passions for music and playing guitar. In 2009 Mike formed “Touch of Rust” and enjoys being a part of this musical team. He has been heard saying, “Always wanting to be a better player is the curse of being a guitarist.”
After many years of “noodling” on the acoustic guitar in the comfort of his own home, Victor was given the offer of a lifetime…to join a Classic Rock Band. In the spring of 2009, he bought a bass guitar, amp and assorted accessories and began the pursuit of learning how to play. Victor’s music interests are found in country, rock and heavy metal. His favorites include Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Dio, Rainbow, George Strait, Garth Brooks, Jimmy Buffett and so many more. He has come to appreciate that sweet sound of the bass found in the classics…James Jamerson, Geezer Butler, Roger Glover. John Entwistle…”Ever since I’ve starting learning how to play the bass, it’s like hearing the songs for the first time all over again.”
At 17 years old Todd starting playing guitar and shortly after he joined forces with Mike Smeed and formed the band “Live Bait”. The two played, “Turning Japanese” and “Gimme 3 Steps” in a HS talent show at the age of 18. From ages 19-21 Todd played bass with the band, Typhoon.” He boasts about a custom (ABT) Stratocaster as his favorite guitar and musical influences as Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd. 20 years into his musical career has reconnected with Mike Smeed to form “Touch of Rust” and the rest, as they say, “is history.”
Andy moved to Minnesota from Milwaukee in 2000. He has played guitar for about 18 years, bass for 13, and drums for 12. Touch of Rust is looking forward to mixing things up from time to time by adding Andy’s diverse talents. The fact he is an award winning jazz singer (bass vocalist) is just a bonus for Touch of Rust. He has played in various bands throughout the past 16 years and has a passion for classic rock and music of the 90’s. He is currently the front man in the mid-west’s number one Nirvana tribute band, Lithium, where he plays as “Kurt”, also the front man of the grunge/punk band trio Under None –Both of these bands have helped shape his vocal styling and front man dynamics. Touch of Rust is fortunate to have him because of his passion to perform classic rock songs that people know and love. We are excited about having a new vocal dynamic in the band, singing silky vocal lines like Elvis and minutes later, peeling your face off with Robert Plant and John Forgerty styles. Andy’s influences are all over the place: Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Beach Boys, Green Day, Rolling Stones, Alkaline Trio, Muse, Johnny Cash, System of a Down, Chevelle, Deftones, CCR, and so much more. The only problem here is that the gigs have to end at some point in the evening- Andy is sure to keep you wanting more!
Eric grew up in the classic rock era listening to bands like The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Rush and ZZ Top among so many others, so the classic rock genre is the perfect fit. As he got older, one band stood out for him, and that was Pink Floyd. It was as much the perfect production of their music as much as it was the songs themselves. He appreciates the way all of the musical elements came together on songs like Money, Time, Another Brick in the Wall (Part I) Comfortably Numb, and especially Us and Them. Eric has a passion for developing and producing the ultimate listener experience with the combination of sound and lighting. He is a welcomed addition to Touch of Rust in that we would not sound as good as we do without him. Each venue is a new challenge, and we can’t wait for each show to see what Eric will do next!
Jon is riginally from Mounds View Mn., currently residing in Blaine. Jon started hitting stuff when he was sixteen years old. It wasn’t long after that he knew this was what he needed to do. Jon actually made a living at it for a few years- which is NOT an easy task. Jon’s tubs consist of 6 piece custom sized Gretsch cannons and signature Zildjian cymbals.
Jon toured regionally with The Wild Dogs and Romeo and played in Florida for a while with a band called Zachariah. He was lucky to share the stage with Bachmann Turner Overdrive, Leon Russell, and Edgar Winter. He always ended up back in Minnesota where he boasts, “The great music comes out of here.” Some of Jon’s influences are John Bonham- Led Zeppelin, Ian Paice-Deep Purple and Ginger Baker-Cream.
Recently Jon played with Grand Theft Audio, a heavier cover band and his latest project was with a band called Geezer Flow, a Pearl Jam tribute band. Jon has filled in for Touch of Rust in the past and is a welcomed, permanent addition to the group.
