Here’s my story. I was born and raised in northwestern Minnesota and moved to Minneapolis for college. While I started playing guitar and performing in junior high, it wasn’t until a few years ago that I tried my hand at songwriting. I remember sitting in my downtown apartment, looking at the lights of the city around me, and thinking how different the view was compared to growing up in a small town. I decided to go with that vibe and write a song called “City Lights”. So that’s the short version of how this journey started.
Also - side note - the first show I ever did was in the fall of 2011. The promoter made up all these really nice posters, except he completely misspelled my last name. Like, not even close. So that’s when I decided to go with the stage name Nolan John, as John is my middle name.
In the spring of 2013, I collaborated with my friend and producer/bassist Jimmy Stofer to record a few of my favorite songs at a Minneapolis studio. The result is my debut EP, City Lights, which was released September 17, 2013. The effort includes four original songs, including the title track. You can find it on iTunes, AmazonMP3, and Bandcamp.
I hope you enjoy the music and can make it to the release party in December.
