The Hawkline Monster is as ambitious and eclectic as the novel’s author from which they gleaned their name, hopscotching through an array of styles, song to song as often as Brautigan would from novel to novel. The band consists of core members Michael Patrick Vitale (Vocals, Guitars), Frank Reina (Drums, Percussion), Brad Cummings (Bass), as well as a host of close friends within the local music community. The Hawkline Monster makes no apologies for their diverse sound and it’s difficult to guess where this Long Beach, CA based band is heading next with each successive track on We Create and We Are Created: exploring the primal origins of man in their rock anthem The Jungle, daring you not to sing along to Latchkey Kid’s African-waltz-tinged story of parental neglect and a child’s perseverance, and the infectious Afro-Cuban driven groove of Recess underlies Vitale’s musings over adults never really growing up. While having an assortment of noteworthy uptempo cuts, We Create and We Are Created also moves seamlessly into mid tempo grooves and ballads including Fool For You and Lovely, before ending on an exotic and mysterious tone poem called The Siren that cradles the beguiling plight of a shipwrecked sailor.
Drummer Frank Reina says, “We spent a year just tossing around different ideas and arrangements for the songs Michael was bringing to the table. We spent a lot of time just making music in garages and bedrooms because it’s fun; we’re chasing that electric spark we felt when we were fifteen, creating music in the same places.” Once Vitale had 11 songs produced for the album, he hired his friends Chris Karn (Producing, Mixing and Engineering credits with Daniel Lanois, Rocco DeLuca, Joe Chiccarelli ) and Barrett Slagle
(Mixing credits for The Steelwells), to mix the album. We Create and We Are Created was mastered by the Pete Lyman at Infrasonic Sound in Los Angeles, CA. The Hawkline Monster will be celebrating the release of their first full length album on compact disc, Thursday March 27 2014 at The Constellation Room in Santa Ana at 9:30PM.
When asked how his mom and dad feel about The Hawkline Monster’s new album We Create and We Are Created, Vitale said, “When I was eight, I told my parents I wanted to be an astronaut. By musically and lyrically exploring our own sonic space and the broad horizon of humanity in this first release, I made good on that ambition. However, I’ll let my parents, or whoever else, poke holes in that analogy should they feel the need. We’ll turn out the lights in our bedroom, cover the moon with that metaphor, and make it look like stars. Whether it’s inner space or outer space, there is always somewhere new to explore with music.”

If you were to spin a globe of Earth and randomly put your finger down on the first thing it hits, it would most likely end up in the blue of an ocean. That very spot where you placed your finger is where you would find The Hawkline Monster and their music, having a salty cup of coffee with Jacque Cousteau, Paul Simon, Gordon Summers, The Beach Boys, Charlie Hunter, and practically every other person in their iTunes catalogue at the moment that they fancy. It's a deep list, probably just as deep as the Mariana Trench. There they are, gathered around their table, just talking to each other—and hey, if you don't like what they've got to say, it's okay. Maybe you should think twice about spinning a globe and putting your finger down just anywhere, mimsy-pimsy and such. Shameful. Anyway—where was I? Oh yeah. That's where you would find them all: sipping their drinks, sharing stories (well as best they can—they're all under water), and drowning in an endless ocean of free association. Yeah, they sound like that.
