I got my start by consciously pursuing the guitar during my first semester of college, fall of 2007 at Cal State Monterey Bay. I decided on attending the school on a total whim…I had always dabbled in audio mixing at the local church I grew up attending by working with my dad who would man the soundboard. Through the years I attended my classes which included Vocal Training as well as Music Production and other general music technology courses. All the while I started playing at local open mics and setting up shows along the Monterey Peninsula as well as back in my hometown of Granite Bay, California (near Sacramento). I was turned onto songwriting by listening to some of my favorite artist which include Damien Rice, Ryan Adams, Gillian Welch and other artists of the past such as Nick Drake, Simon & Garfunkel, Neil Young, The Kinks and of course; The Beatles. Currently I still love listening to all these great artist as well as other genres like jazz (Coltrane and Davis) and pioneering rock groups such as The Mars Volta and Dredg.
The last couple years that I spent at CSUMB were geared toward making records. I got together with my good friend Andrew Morgan, who was a local singer/songwriter trying to record some good tunes to share with friends and family. He approached me with 3 or 4 songs partially complete. Somehow through lots of hard work and dedication, a full length album’s worth of material was written, recorded, and mixed. I had my first album under my belt! From here I went on to work with Andrea Juran to co-produce and mix a compilation entitled Out of the Ordinary, consisting completely of CSUMB artists. 10 songs, each from a different genre were compiled into one album of great music that was provided for free to students of CSUMB. My most recent work was with the group Coward at Sea. The group is made up entirely of CSUMB students, and play indie rock similar in sound to Mumford and Sons. We made a 5 song EP in my small apartment bedroom using a very modest amount of recording equipment…and it sounds great!
I am now 24 years of age, a recent graduate and I’m currently living in Oakland, California. I feel the bay area is the best place for me to try and get more attention since the area thrives on art and diverse culture. I love it. I work at a music store which specializes in sheet music. Being around so much historic music really inspires me to get better at my craft. Besides trying to write better songs and improving my skills on the guitar, I also want to take the same enthusiasm to what I create recording-wise. I am working on a full length record of my own songs and hope to push the boundaries of who I am as an artist and person during the process. But I don’t intend to limit myself to this project alone. I’d like to reach out to other artists with a similar vision…to create something unique, true and maybe even inspiring…it’s as simple as that.
Thanks for taking the time to read my story!
