Portland, OR based "Castletown" derives their name from a small town in County Cork, Ireland. Their music blends the energy of traditional Irish reels with modern folk and country influences with Rachel Bowen on fiddle and Robert Richter on guitar and vocals. Tricia Fairman also join in to perform on some shows.
Rachel Bowen started taking Suzuki violin classes at age six. After her family went to a performance of Alasdair Fraser and the San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers, her mother decided that she and her father should join the club and learn Scottish fiddle as a bonding experience. Rachel went to fiddle camps all through school and took lessons with several amazing fiddlers including Suzy Thompson and Darol Anger, while also playing violin in local school and youth orchestras. She picked up the viola in middle school when an orchestra teacher offered it as a challenge. Rachel moved to Portland in 2008. She also started writing fiddle tunes, including the one named for her cat, Littles.
Portlander Richter began teaching himself guitar at the age of 12 when he purchased a Sears "Silvertone" guitar from a neighbor for $5 and the promise to mow his lawn for a month. (He still has the guitar) Over the years Richter has become known as a versatile singer/songwriter and guitarist. His skilled and emotional slide guitar playing often works his audiences into “hoots and hollers.”
Richter’s credits include appearing on Tom May's nationally syndicated radio program "River City Folk," carried on more than 250 NPR affiliates nationwide. In addition, his music was played on the "Bob Dylan Radio Hour" heard on the Sirius Satellite Network and on KUSF-FM in San Francisco.
"Robert Richter is a charismatic entertainer that gives his all every time he performs and is a stellar musician.” Morry Feldman, WQED-FM Pittsburgh, PA.
Together the two perform both traditional and modern Irish and Celtic Folk Rock. A new CD titled "Castletown" is available for sale at live shows.
