I grew up listening to my father play folk music whether around a camp fire or performing on stage to large crowds. I caught the performing bug at an early age and decided to pick up one of his acoustics, he was happy to show me the basic chords G-C-D etc. by junior high I ...was running home from school just so I could sit in my room and learn a new song.
By 16 I was playing in local Rock bands. Shortly there after I was bit by the recording bug, after doing a few backing tracks in a local studio. At that point I knew I wanted to be involved in the engineering/production side of the music business. I threw myself into the world of MIDI/home recording in the late 80's. By my Senior year in high school I had plans to attend the best Music Engineering college I could find, which at the time happened to be Full Sail Center for the Recording Arts in Winter Park (Orlando), Florida. As soon as I graduated high school I was off to Orlando.
Full Sail was a great oppritunity it allowed me to meet many industry professionals and after graduating I ended up opening a small project studio "GrayWolf Studio" in Altamonte Springs, Florida. At the same time I joined up with my Father to form the JP Murphy Duo, an Irish Folk duo performing around the Orlando area. We were hired to play as house duo at Finnegans Pub located in Universal Studios theme park in Orlando.
After deciding to move back to the Berkshires in the mid 90s to start a family with my high school sweet heart Laurie, who put up with me through the Crazy schedules and life as an engineer/musician in Orlando. We settled in and I started a Project Studio in the beautiful Berkshires which I still own and operate. Shire Sound is a cozy project/recording studio nestled in the Berkshire Hills, more on that later, but its where I spend my downtime writing, rehearsing, and recording my own originals and jingles as well as other local talent.
While honing my skills as an engineer/songwriter and performer I've continued to play guitar, bass foot pedal and sing in the JP Murphy Band www.jpmurphymusic.com and perform at local venues as a solo acoustic folk/rock guitarist/singer. You can catch me Tuesday nights from 8 to 11pm at the Purple Pub in Williamstown, MA hosting a local open mic.
