Grouchtown Grinners / Bio

The Grouchtown Grinners are a group of friends from up and down the East Tennessee Valley who have been grinning together just a little bit longer than they’ve been playing together. Ian Davidson grew up near Rogersville, TN, where he learned to sing, drum, and play guitar. Ian’s music took him to Los Angeles for a while, but he eventually returned to East Tennessee. In addition to playing with the Grinners, he plays with his longtime friend, Nick Spirko, in the band Briar Thickett.

Chris Durman was raised almost equally in Dandridge, TN, and Morristown, TN. After spending a few years in harder rocking bands such as Death Row and Oedipus Rex, he was tutored in the ways of hot peppers and bluegrass by members of The New Left. In Knoxville he was a founding member of the folk-rock bands Exit 65 and Smiley and the Lovedawg. He also has a world of fun playing these days with the John Myers Band.

Leslie Gengozian grew up in Oak Ridge, TN, playing the violin and singing in church. She went to UT and then lived in Atlanta for ten years where she made a career focused on mezzo soprano vocals, paid church work, and teaching. At 28, she picked up the violin again and, on a dare, decided to play country fiddle instead. Back in East Tennessee, she has been a member of the Marble City String Band, the Twest band, Van Eaton and Friends, Centralia Massacre, and Smiley and the Lovedawg.

Steve White hails from Talbott, TN, near Morristown where he started playing guitar just after graduating high school. A few years after taking up the guitar he borrowed his first mandolin and found the instrument for which he’s most renowned. Steve has been jamming with anyone and everyone ever since he started playing and has probably played with more people than all the other Grinners combined. Steve’s also a member of Exit 65, Smiley and the Lovedawg, and the John Myers Band.

The first time the Grouchtown Grinners came together to play has been lost to history, but they decided to become an official band in 2011. Every one of them brings different interests, talents, and songs to the mix and they’re having a ball stirring it all together in the punch bowl!
