Like so many that have come before him, Cody Sumpter knows the road he’s chosen doesn’t come easy or without the diligence for the task at hand…..to be true to himself and the music he makes. Cody is also keenly aware that this road was a road that was chosen for him and by no means is paved with gold. The music he makes is a gift that he doesn’t take lightly nor, the idea, that he has a unique ability to share his gift unconditionally with his fans. It is with that he made the journey from the family farm in the San Joaquin Valley of California to Nashville to follow his passion for country music knowing in his soul that, as he says, “Without the fans and friends to share my music with, what’s the point.”
It seems natural then to let the fans ask the questions they want answered about this small town California farm boy.
How did growing up in California influence your music style:
Married or single?
Cody ~ (have Cody elaborate here)
When you’re kicked back hanging out what kind of music do you like to listen to?
Cody~ “We’ll I’m always kind of ‘kicked back’ and relaxed….and the music….George Strait is a favorite no matter if I’m having a beer with friends or trying to get into the creative writing mode. I’ve always gravitated to ‘classic’ country like The Highway Men, but like anyone there are times when I’ll throw in some of the new players like Jamie Johnson and Jason Aldean.”
Why country and not more of an LA scene style music?
Cody ~ “My parents had a band when I was growing up and were a huge influence in my becoming an artist. I grew up on the family farm, fell asleep listening to the sound of my parents and their band mates practicing….it was all a very natural course.”
Why not go into farming?
Cody ~ “My Dad made no qualms about me NOT becoming a farmer. Times are changing and the ‘family’ farm is becoming more and more challenging to maintain. I studied graphic design and marketing in college yet music kept calling me back. I love music and it loves me back. It’s a very synergetic relationship.”
Was it hard to move from Cali to Tennessee?
Cody ~ “I loved growing up in California. There is so much more to it than beaches and hippies, but I love living where there are seasons. The San Joaquin Valley where I grew up has two seasons hot and 2 weeks of rain. The first time I saw a Tennessee snow I just sat and watched it fall….it was beautiful and inspiring. I fell in love…..
How does the making of your new album differ from your first cd?
Cody~ This project has been a very ‘hands-on” project for me. I learned some valuable lessons the first time around and decided from now on I’m going to be much more involved in every process of making my music, from the songs chosen to the end product. It’s all about staying true to myself and connecting with the fans.
We like your hair! (Thanks Tami and Kiki!!) Are you going to keep it long or cut it off like everyone seems to do once they get big?
Cody ~ “I’m going to do like Willie does….let it grow. Again it’s all about staying true to myself. This is simply who I am.”
