The Alchemy Unit was formed in 2004 by guitarist and songwriter Ash Umhey. After some early recordings, things began to take shape with the release of the Moon Strings on the Fringe album in 2006. It featured Ash on all instruments except drums. The following year, he set up Sterling Street Studios, a private rehearsal and recording space in Kingston, NY and began working on new material. These sessions would span three years, involved the participation of several additional musicians, and resulted in the expansive Eprouvette Ascenseur album in 2010. Although the lineup would continue to shift, The Alchemy Unit also began performing live shows including the Rock the Resort festival headlined by KRS-One, DJ Logic, Soulive, and New Riders of the Purple Sage. Rehearsals and recording sessions then moved to the Seven 21 Media Center, and a spin-off project called Plush Crustaceans emerged as a vehicle for further experimentation in the avant garde. Ash has also been performing and recording with other artists including Venture Lift, and Les Bicyclettes Blanches in the Hudson Valley, New York, and Paris. In 2012, The Alchemy Unit began recording a third album, Time and Space which was released at the beginning of 2014.
