The Alchemy Unit was formed in 2004 by guitarist and songwriter, Ash Umhey. The debut album Moon Strings on the Fringe was released in 2006. The following year, Sterling Street Studios was set up as a rehearsal and recording space in Kingston, NY. These sessions would span three years, and resulted in the Eprouvette Ascenseur album. Although the lineup would continue to shift, The Alchemy Unit also began performing live shows including the Rock the Resort festival headlined by KRS-One, DJ Logic, Soulive, and New Riders of the Purple Sage. Rehearsals and recording sessions then moved to Seven 21 Media, and a spin-off project called Plush Crustaceans emerged as a vehicle for further experimentation. Ash has also been performing and recording with other artists including Venture Lift, and Les Bicyclettes Blanches in the Hudson Valley, New York, and Paris. After a two year hiatus, The Alchemy Unit began recording material for a third album, Time and Space which was released at the beginning of 2014.
