"Wong is no ordinary performer." - R. Kurt Osenlund, Pennington Post
Matt Wong, from West Windsor, New Jersey is far from ordinary. Only 15 years old, the teenager is on his way to becoming one of the finest in today's guitar scene. He has toured the tri-state area, released a solo album, and has been nominated for Top 18 & Under Instrumentalist in this year's Jersey Acoustic Music Awards.
Matt picked up the guitar at age six and has been playing ever since. He currently focuses on playing what he calls, "fingerstyle," which allows him to hold down the melody, rhythm, and bass parts simultaneously, while adding a little percussion. Wong was first inspired to play this style when he heard legendary guitarist, Tommy Emmanuel playing using this method via YouTube. Emmanuel has had a large impact on Matt's musical journey. Using fingerstyle, Matt has composed several originals and has also arranged a number of well known songs. His originals are Jazz based, but also include elements of Blues, Rock, Country and Classical music.
As a touring artist, Matt performed throughout the tri-state area, and Pennsylvania. Wong has been invited to perform at notable events including Indie Music Night in Princeton, and Art All Night in Trenton, and has played concerts at venues such as Milkboy Coffee in Ardmore, PA, The Fire in Philadelphia, and the Record Collector Store in Bordentown, NJ. Matt has also appeared with Rebop, a Jazz group at Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes fundraiser, an event that was sponsored by Novo Nordisk for a crowd of approximately 600 people. Plans for Matt's Summer 2013 Tour are currently underway. Matt has shared the stage with well known artists such as Taylor Hope, Nikki Briar, Writer's Block, Sarah Donner, Kelly Carvin, and Wakah Chan.
As an aspiring producer, Matt has also done work in the studio. In the summer of 2011, Wong self produced his debut album Fly me to the Moon, which was released on October 20, 2011. The album features 6 originals and 6 cover tunes which were all arranged by Matt. The album has received much praise from both fans and music industry professionals. Matt's original song, Summertime Skies is a favorite track among all listeners. In July 2012, Matt was invited to attend the GRAMMY Foundation's prestigious program, GRAMMY Camp in Los Angeles, California.
"Matt is a great guitar player. He has a very established technique and always knows what he is doing. I love hearing him play." - Z. Wilks, Bassist
