WILLIAM WOLFF, THE “SONIC WIZARD”
“Sonic Wizard” and recording artist William Wolff is a master of stringed instruments, from guitar to bass and viola. With a musical signature that might be described as Instrumental Progressive Rock/Metal with a dollop of electronica and a dash of Brazilian, he is set to release a collective of four bookend EPs, beginning with “Waves Of Influence.” Combined, the project will ultimately tell a complete story, teased with first single “Billy West,” which meshes a mysterious palette of transcendent rhythms and special effects to conjure the likes of the old West or a haunted house high on the hill.
Wolff’s ultimate musical mission: to develop techniques that make listeners feel as if they are “inside” the melodic environment and yet vexed by a spooky neural aura of isolation. Among other tracks he has created using a diversity of influences and stylistic innovation—from heavy metal to blues—are “Lua Nova,” with rock chords driven by guitar, blended with viola and a Maracatu rhythm; and “Manga Rosa,” which offers a funky groove of guitars and viola over a Samba beat.
Brazilian-born Wolff began studying music after he won a guitar at the age of 13. Two years later, he saved the money to buy his first electric guitar, and began performing in the state of Paraná, Brazil. Now, nearly 20 years later, he has studied guitar techniques under the tutelage of renowned guitarist Steve Vai at Berklee School of Music; and inked a deal with Vai’s online label Digital Nations. Wolff’s formal education includes Post-Graduate studies at Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná.
In addition to composing and recording, he is a professional Senior Systems Analyst in the software development industry. In 2004, he launched his own technology and entertainment company WDW Technology & Entertainment (WDWTechnology.com) in Curitiba, Brazil, whose specialties include computer 3D graphics, sound design and software development. The Administration & Economy Superior Institute of the Getulio Vargas Foundation (ISAE/FGV) supported the firm as one of a series of incubator projects it sponsored. Wolff also maintains his own online entertainment forum, WolffEntertainment.com, a discussion board for gaming, music and visual arts.
By the light of the moon, the “Sonic Wizard” works on his own musical creations in a home studio—composing, playing, recording, mixing and mastering—while he also plays in several live bands.
