Code 22 was formed in 2011 by Chris McKinnis and Wesley Powell, who had played together off and on since high school on the mean streets of Enid. Code 22 came out strong in the pop punk scene in OKC. After releasing their first self-titled album and playing various shows around OKC, Code 22 started undergoing lineup changes in order to get the right fit and the right sound. While waiting to complete the lineup, Chris was busy writing new catchy riffs with a twist of nerd rock. In early 2012 there was a call for a new bass player. This call would be answered by Rob Malmberg. Rob was had been playing in the hard rock scene of OKC but was always on the lookout for an opportunity to start a pop punk band. A couple of months later, while still trying to find the right fit, an amazingly talented metal guitarist came along. Skyler Tuter brought some amazing lead guitar licks to the band that aren’t normally heard in the pop punk community. While the trio was searching for that perfect drummer, they were busy writing their first acoustic EP entitled “Going Soft”. After a long selection process of finding a drummer, once again a call would be answered by the young and energetic forces known as Sam McCool. Realizing everyone shared an interest in nerdy pop culture, the band composed some popular cover tracks like TMNT, X-Men, and Star Wars. This nerd rock mentality solidified the group as a whole allowing them to hit the ground running playing shows and writing their sophomore album “Say What!”. It is unlike any sound they have put together before. It has a harder driving sound that the band has been looking for all along. The band has had the opportunity to play with some of their favorite bands such as Chunk! No, Captain Chunk, City Lights, and Red Jumpsuit Apparatus just to name a few. Now on the cusp of the release of “Say What!” the guys are as fired up as ever and ready to go. Keep an eye out because they are headed your way!!
