James Durst / Bio

Quietly traversing the planet as a touring artist since 1965, James has performed for rapt audiences of all ages in all 50 states & the District of Columbia and more than 200 cities beyond our borders in 45 countries throughout the Americas, Europe, Scandinavia, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, in Russia, Azerbaijan, Japan, Taiwan, Korea and most recently, numerous times each in India (7x) and Israel (5x). In October 2011 James returned to Ho Chi Minh City for the first time since touring throughout South Vietnam in 1974 (under the aegis of the USIS/State Department) to honor that nation's premier composer Pham Duy (1920-2013) on the occasion of his 91st birthday (see VIDEO, right).
James draws from a rich and ever-evolving repertoire of distinctive songs both original and gathered in more than two dozen languages that reflect a global perspective and underscore the interconnectedness we share with Spaceship Earth and all of life. Engaging each disparate audience in a participatory journey distilled from his travels, he brings us closer to our world and to each other. His newest album, 'My Country Is The World' (WW22, 2013) is a vivid reflection of the global perspective gleaned from his travels: 20 tracks of collected and original songs in 19 languages. Folk Roots Magazine said, "The diversity is astonishing. This is a beautiful CD."
The interplay of his skillful, rhythmic guitar playing and strong, expressive voice provides a colorful palette which he uses to paint compelling musical pictures that encourage individual empowerment, compassionate relationships, environmental sustainability, diversity, greater human understanding and peace, while helping us to feel more hopeful about ourselves and our place on the planet. His performances are spirited, lighthearted, relevant and quite often humorous.
Once, following his concert in Skopje, Macedonia, a woman who spoke no English found him backstage. Through an interpreter she said, "I didn't understand a word, but," touching the area of her heart, "I understood what you were saying."
