Craftsman, musician and author Tom was born on Cape Breton Island in 1971.
"The house I grew up in was built by my father and my grand uncle; it was no more than a mile or two away (as the crow flies) from the Sydney Tar Ponds...how could I not be inspired to bust away and tell people about it...music became my vehicle of choice."
2011 may indeed become the year of the fish for Tom Fidgen beginning with his newest record release - a boy called fish.
A much anticipated studio recording from this post-modern renaissance-man, the album follows after the roller coaster year writing the top selling wood working book of 2010,
Made by Hand - Furniture Projects from the Unplugged Woodshop.
Musician, author and craftsman, Fidgen recruited friend and former bandmate, Juno-award winner and Canadian 'guitar-man', Stuart Cameron to produce the project. They met in Cape Breton, NS some 18 years before when Fidgen founded the indie-adorned band Sunfish. In 1992, Sunfish recorded its first album and it too was produced by a then slightly younger, Stuart Cameron.
From 2003 to 2007 Tom starts building traditional style wooden boats in a one man boat shop on the Western Coast of Cape Breton Island and wins the peoples choice award two consecutive years at the Mahone Bay Wooden Boat Show. This working with wood develops into custom furniture design and by 2009 Tom is at the beginning of writing Made by Hand. That book is now in it's second printing and Tom is eager to get back to performing live music - a boy called fish is the vehicle that will take him there.
"The characters that transcend Tom's music are very believable and just a little bit frightening..."
