Marques Carroll / Bio

Marques Carroll has become one of the most diverse sought-out trumpet players the city of Chicago has to offer. It is St. Louis and his upbringing that he claims as being his foundation to success. At the age of 8 is when his life would be changed forever. Marques's grandfather, Lawrence Carroll was a modest trumpet player and was well connected in the St. Louis music scene. He was a member and former director of the Tom Powell Post, a Drum and Bugle Corp which exposed music to the children in the inner city of St. Louis. He was also a good friend of Clark Terry who was a mentor not only to him but Marques as well. It was Marques's grandfather who saw the possibilities and the opportunities that music could bring to someone's life. This is where Marques would develop his foundation in music theory, history, education and the belief that music is the best way to express oneself. Marques left St. Louis to attend DePaul University where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Jazz Studies performance. Marques has shared the stage with great musicians including Dick Oates, Tom Harrell, Slide Hampton, Bob Brookmeyer, Jon Fedchock, Nicholas Payton, Joe Lovano, Byron Stripling, Kenny Werner, Clark Terry, Louie Bellson, Jon Faddis, Carl Allen, Christian McBride, Etienne Charles, Meshell Ndegocello and countless others. Marques has never forgotten where he came from and what his family instilled in him, which is, "Always march to the beat of your own drummer" and "Always travel the road less traveled". These two ideas have stuck with Marques because it defines who he is as a person first, then a musician. Marques has become a top call freelance musician who not only plays great lead trumpet for such groups as the Chicago Yestet or subbing in the Chicago Jazz Ensemble(directed by drummer Dana Hall) but he can also be heard soloing or leading a section for blues guitarist Guy King, The Ohio Players, The Temptations, The Tom Matta Big Band, The DePaul Alumni Big Band, The BMC and The Larry King Orchestra. Marques has also had the pleasure of traveling to perform throughout Europe, Vietnam (Hue Music Festival) and the Montreal Jazz Festival. Marques is also deeply rooted in music education throughout the city of Chicago. He has been a trumpet faculty member at New Trier High School for the past 6 years mentoring students in classical, jazz and basic trumpet pedagogy. He also assist as a Jazz combo instructor. For the last three years Marques has been the Musical Director for the Jazz Department at the Chicago Jesuit Academy in which students are exposed to jazz history, theory and instrumental pedagogy. This program has become a cornerstone for the school itself and has provided many students to continue their love for music on a higher level at the Chi Arts Academy. Marques has also done great work with the Chicago Public school system giving clinics and master classes in trumpet and jazz performance. Marques has also worked with students at Midwest Young Artist as a guest clinician. Marques is currently embarking on his first album as band leader with his quintet.
