Ashaki is an international Jazz singer from Detroit who creates a Magical Musical Aura that audiences everywhere eagerly embrace. A graduate of Cass Tech High School, her original career plans were to become a doctor. But she grew up in a family of church singers and, after getting a taste of performing, the appeal of becoming a professional singer never left her. So, after a short stint at Wayne State University, she decided to give singing her primary focus.
While Ashaki's roots are in Gospel from singing in church, she held a much greater love for the music of Jazz greats, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. Eventually, her interest ultimately shifted completely toward Jazz and she chose to make it her musical brand.
Ashaki began her formal singing instruction with one of the very best - pianist Harold McKinney, who took her under his wing and gave her specialized training at music workshops that he hosted at the Serengeti Ballroom on Woodward Avenue. Later she met famed trumpeter, Marcus Belgrave, and he made her his primary vocalist for two years. That was followed by several gigs in Japan and then a return to the states to establish strong roots in the local music scene.
Natural talent, hard work and public recognition brought success as Ashaki landed bookings at famous Detroit Jazz clubs like Baker's Keyboard Lounge, Bert's Motown Lounge, Absolute Tiffany's, The Comfort Zone, and Cafe Mahogany. Soon after, prestigious venues like The Music Hall, Orchestra Hall, The DIA, and The Museum of African American History opened their doors to her. Her fan base and her notoriety as an elite artist grew quickly.
In the summer of 2013, Ashaki had the honor of performing with renowned singers, Thornetta Davis and Kimmie Horne, and was chosen to be a member of the prestigious "Detroit Divas Project". She currently sings for noted musician, Ralphe Armstrong, at the Greektown Casino and performs regularly at various nightclubs around Detroit.
How does she describe herself? "I've been told that I have the voice of an angel and a heart of gold. I'm happy with that. I like to think of myself as a soothing, soulful, elegant vocalist with a naturally pure voice. When I take the stage, I want the audience to experience every emotion I have."
Ashaki is a remarkable vocalist and entertainer. It takes only one verse and chorus to recognize and appreciate her marvelous talent. Come see her perform at one of Metro-Detroit's fine entertainment venues!
