Rare Standard is the brainchild of saxophonist Timothy Gay (Aaron-Carl, Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas) and drummer Doug Austin (Broken Day Machine, Blackmail). Formed in 2010 in Detroit, Michigan, they sought to find a way to move the art of jazz forward. They recruited Detroit Music Award winning musicians, bassist Damon Warmack (KEM, Bob James) and pianist Scott Gwinnell (Jon Hendricks, John Clayton). With the variation in musical backgrounds and influences, the group produces a unique sound that carries the banner of creative music from the city of Detroit.
Rare Standard is creating a movement with their brand of jazz called “Modern-Progressive Jazz.” Nicknamed “The Revolution,” combining the culture from the classic jazz masters with the fierce energy of fusion and the experiential edge of modern jazz artists like Robert Glasper, they look to blaze a new trail in jazz while making the old sound new again.
