Mo DeBree originated with Kevin and Kelli Moss in the Spring of 1998. Their idea was to draw together a crew of seasoned musicians acclaimed for their sound quality, not their volume level, to play standards, deep in the mix and original arrangements of blues and R&B music. Once the players were assembled, rehearsals began in May of that year.
In February 1999, Mo DeBree made its club debut at Medley’s Restaurant in Shockoe Bottom. The original members were Mike Edwards, drums; Kevin Moss, bass guitar; Russell Marsh, keyboards; the late, great Joe Sheets, guitar; and Kelli Moss, lead vocals.
Since that time, Mo DeBree has played for many functions, both public and private, regularly netting more gigs from a loyal and ever growing fan base. The response has been overwhelming and gratifying from those who have enjoyed the band at public and private functions, including weddings, Lodge functions, parties, benefits, and the Virginia Museum’s Art After Hours program.
This band has been blessed with many talented musicians since its beginning, including Rick Meek, guitar; Brian Fones, guitar and vocals; Steve Utt, keyboards; and Matt Noah, keyboards and vocals.
Mo DeBree currently includes some of the finest musical talent in the region with Johnny Morris on drums and vocals, Kevin Moss on bass guitar and vocals, John Holmes on keyboards and vocals, Velpo Robertson on guitar and vocals, and Kelli Moss, lead vocals.
This year marks a time of continued expansion of Mo DeBree in its musical direction and venues. Mo DeBree continues its legacy as an extraordinary R&B band that rocks blues straight from the soul.
