Ben Anderson: Music and Social Justice
Music and social justice have long been two of my strongest interests. I firmly believe in the power of music to heal. Music has been instrumental in my journey to opening hearts and minds, and it has motivated me to lead a monthly Classic Rock Sing-Along at the Talking Stick Cafe in Venice, CA (http://www.thetalkingstick.net/). As a musician with Asperger's Syndrome and a French/English bilingual my vision includes building bridges among many sorts of people and creating an artistically supportive community.
My passion for music and social justice has led me into a multitude of venues, performing for a variety of audiences, both locally and nationally. During and since my studies at Musicians' lnstitute (http://www.mi.edu), I have exemplified, through my own life, that people on the Spectrum have many gifts, not just challenges. I also worked weekly for a year as a phone banker for the President's re-election campaign, which included writing a campaign song.
ln keeping with my efforts to spread a message of greater understanding, I participated in Amy Teague's documentary, "All the Lonely People" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2499042/), part of the USC web-site "lnteracting with Autism" (http://www.interactingwithautism.com/). I have also been featured in the LA Daily News and other radio and television interviews. ln “Natural Genius: The Gifts of Asperger’s Syndrome” (Jessica Kingsley Publishers - www.jkp.com) my mother, Susan Rubinyi tells the story of raising a bilingual, musical son with Asperger's.
I would like to continue my music and social justice outreach both individually and collectively through:
Using music as a bridge to bring people together, leading sing-alongs and performing my originals in a variety of venues, including benefit concerts for social issues. (French, folk repertoire as well).
Expanding my knowledge of social advocacy through multiple modalities - in addition to music - such as lobbying, research & polling.
Looking forward to hearing from you! I can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org
