Malignent started, like with everything else, as an idea. An idea to create a band that plays kick ass metal music. With hardly any experience, but a shit load of passion and love for the music, Kevin and Bryan Angel started taking private music lessons every monday for 30 minutes. After 8 months of lessons they started creating and writting their own songs together. The Angel brothers, born in LA, raised in the streets of south central, formed a few bands before actually establishing Malignent. One of them being: Serium; a band formed in high school around the years 2003-2006. Played in a few high schools and areas around LA and won mostly all battle of the bands contests entered. Last show was at the Whisky on sunset opening up for Otep. Next band was called Reviles; formed around the years 2007-2009. Played a few local shows around LA & Pomona. Split because of musical differences.
Then there was Malignent; formed around the year 2010, with no bass player and the help of guitar player and close friend of the Angel bros., Emmanuel Pinedo from the kick ass band Epokah. Early Malignent played a few shows around LA, not a lot only a few shows here & there mainly for close friends. The show that really got Malignent recognized that year was, Sunday September 12th 2010, Tony Alva's 53RD birthday party featuring Rise Against. We opened up that day and the crowd went fucking crazy! Amongst the crowd was Tony Alva, Keith Morris(Black Flag,Circle Jerks,Off), Jake Brown, Sean Sheffey, Julian Sheffey, Eric Dressen, Mimi Knoop, Christian Hosoi, Clint Peterson, Lance Mountain, Eddie Reatugui, Mike Vallely, D.H.(Dead Kennedys), Dave Duncan, Chloe Trujillo and Robert Trujillo(Suicidal Tendencies,Ozzy,BLS,Metallica) plus more. Robert, who personally came up to Malignent after their set, and said to the guys that he enjoyed the music and would like to hear more and see them live again soon, hearing that from him was a great honor and inspiration for Malignent, but unfortunately they weren't ready as a band should be. They were basically a band that had nothing but 20 minutes worth of songs and a brand new name that nobody's ever heard of and not to mention the very first time Kevin was ever singing and playing guitar at the same time. Some how they pulled it off though and everyone enjoyed it. Kevin and Bryan knew something had to be done if they want to take things to the next level so the 2 brothers took some time to really focus on the songs, to actually search for the right members and to basically create the entity known as Malignent.
Since the Serium days there was another kick ass band from south central LA going through their musical journey as the Angel bros. did. This band was known as Scythe. Starting in 2004 with original first band name Mare, short for nightmare, Erik Soto was on vocals. They started playing a few shows in LA till their original bass player left and Erik, with also the passion of music and learning how to play a instrument, decided to step it up on bass and continue to do vocals, which led to the creation of Scythe in 2006. They played shows all over California with such bands like DRI, Destruction, Forbidden, as well as modern bands like Bonded by Blood, Gama Bomb, Evile, and Warbringer. They became pretty well known in the LA metal scene but, after 7 years of destroying shows every where they went they decided to end it, due to personal differences, with a big final show on April 2012 in a local bar in LA. The talk of Erik joining Malignent started with our photographer Giancarlo Tenorio(85 photography) and his brother Andrew. Erik, still wanting to continue to jam and fuck shit up, had mentioned, even before Scythe's break up, that he was down to jam with the Angel bros.. It was pretty clear that he was in the band, it was just a matter of time. We all got together one night in late April 2012 at Cideshow studios to jam for the very first time ever, and it clicked instantly! We didnt really play a song we just literally jammed it, no covers, no originals, just free style. Kevin and Bryan and everyone else in the room knew, we had now found our other brother to join us in creating this Malignent music.
Since May 2012, as the official Malignent right now, have been playing shows every where people invite them to play, and wrote 9 original songs in between shows. Malignent released their own self produced, engineered and mix/mastered, EP/album "Flesh Blood Bone Mind" on December 21st 2012 and was recorded 1 week prior to the release date. Using only a 12 channel Mackie mixer and Pro Tools with a 2 input Mbox, They tried to capture their songs using the old school approach and give it a raw feeling. The album includes 9 original songs and a KISS cover for a total of 10 songs. Malignent is currently working on new material for 2013 and will have a lot more merchandise for all the Malignent Maniacs plus a lot more things coming your way this year!!!!!
