Now Magazine said "Pike's got the goods" and Canadian Indie Darling Lesley Pike is back to showcase those goods on her new album, Tug of War, where she blends pop sensibility, hints of 80s influence and electronics with her signature vocals and heart-on-sleeve lyrics to create her emotive, quirky sound.
Pike grew up in rural Ontario in a busy female-dominated household with 4 sisters, a dog called Koby, 2 cats, 6 gerbils, a budgie, a financial advisor Mother and a very patient accountant Father who just really loved music. He singularly passed this passion on to Lesley when they often escaped the house and went driving in the family station wagon, singing along to music blaring loudly from the speakers. Early influences were as broad and as varied as Michael Jackson, Bonnie Raitt, Abba, Bob Dylan, Carole King and Neil Young. Pike started studying piano when she was 8, and continued until achieving a BHons in Classical Music from Wilfrid Laurier University and Grade 9 voice from the Royal Conservatory of Music.
Tug of War features eight new, emotive, intimate and quirky original songs, and a hauntingly beautiful cover of the Tears For Fears classic, Head Over Heels. Produced by Tim Glasgow (Metric, Sonic Youth), Juno winner Vincent Marcone (Johnny Hollow) and Lesley, each song on Tug of War is inspired by overwhelming raw emotion, packed with desire - in all its fiery, primal and complicated glory. The making of the album initially, was not without issues, tears and prolonged frustration, false starts, lost recordings, more tears and more frustration, until it all came together the way it should...
Lesley holed up in a studio in London for just three weeks with Glasgow and Marcone, in what turned out to be an extraordinary and very collaborative, speedy process. Working intuitively and instinctively, the trio produced the intimate and insightful set of songs that make up the wonderful recording called Tug of War.
‘The Longest Goodbye’ and ‘We Build Towers’ were put down in just one live take, with the latter also being written on the fly...The quirky toe-tapper ‘White Lies’ was co-written with fellow Canadian songstress’ Emma-Lee and Karen Kosowski, and features nothing more than one cello, one sax, a whole lot of percussion and of course Pike’s amazing voice!
Whilst ‘Weapon Down’ recounts the vivid and horror-filled memory of a shooting Lesley witnessed in the summer of 2011, ‘Tug of War’ is about romance and quickly grew into the title track, and an anthem.
Following the successful 2008 release of her first album, Blink, Pike has been touring extensively through North America and the UK and is known for her engaging and oftentimes hilarious live shows. She has shared the stage with JASON MRAZ, DARIUS RUCKER, Jeremy Fisher, Justin Nozuka, The Dunwells, Danny Michel, Three Dog Night and countless others.
