Meg Todd / Bio

Who is Meg Todd?

Depends who you ask. She’s a wandering artist who can easily transplant and grow roots wherever she lands. She’s a stage maven who knows how to bring a coffee to table 2. She’s a scholar. She’s a family unifier and funny lady. She’s one hell of a tap dancer and she’ll definitely sit down and have a beer with you—especially if you’re buying.

But more than all these things, Meg Todd is a musician. Gritty, sweet and dynamic Meg Todd’s sound is a blend of soulful Americana that is constantly evolving with each song she writes and performs. Influenced by the likes of Norah Jones, The Black Keys, Nancy Sinatra, and Lucinda Williams Meg’s sound is swampy and melodic—a unique blend that provides an answer—This is Meg Todd.

Born in Cambridge Ontario, Meg Todd began writing songs by the age of 8. Maybe it was her grandfather, a dedicated trumpet player who played and arranged for the Queen of England, or her free-spirited entrepreneurial parents, but Meg started out early with the passion to create her own identity in the world through song. By the time she was 13, she was already writing and performing her own songs around town to great praise.

After graduating from high school Meg headed to Toronto to pursue her singing and songwriting, but after a while she decided she needed a greater change of scenery. She enrolled in university in Vancouver, and although her political science studies were feeding her mind her soul was still hungry for music. Instead of trying to satiate her musical self at university open mics she decided to make a bold change and do what many young musicians only dream of doing—she packed up her stuff in a car and moved to LA to pursue her passion for music. She made some successful connections in LA, played bass in a Hollywood band, became the lead singer of a band called The Living back in Vancouver and glued it all together with waitressing jobs here and there.

Even though Meg was loving the lifestyle of a struggling musician, she was craving something more in-depth. Music paved the way to change once again, and she found herself presented with a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston where she studied contemporary writing and production. She studied bass under Victor Wooten, Chuck Rainey and Esperanza Spalding and took advantage of everything the school had to offer: studying, arranging, classical composition, commercial writing, production, mixing, engineering, drums, bass, guitar, piano and vocals. She found her tribe at Berklee and realized that music was her home, no matter where she was.

After her training at Berklee was complete Meg took the leap and set out to create her self-titled debut album in LA. Writing the album was a synthesis of everything that came before her and it resulted in a powerful collection of songs that were recorded with the help of some renowned musicians. Meg enlisted Lynne Earls (KD Lang) as well as the following musicians to play with her on her debut record:
Greg Leisz (Joni Mitchell, Ray LaMontagne, Ben Harper, Stevie Nicks) played on “Broken Eyes” and “Fade and Disappear”. Randy Mitchell (donna summers, billy bob thornton) played on all songs, Shawn Davis (Lenny Kravitz) played on fade and disappear and broken eyes

Recording the album allowed Meg to explore her own musical landscape in a way she never was able to before. She feels blessed to have worked with incredible musicians on the project who met her ideas with such enthusiasm and helped to create a finished sound that realized her lifelong vision. After finishing her first album, Meg feels more creatively free than she ever has and is eager to pave the way to her next record.

Meg is currently living in LA, playing with The Magics in such legendary venues as The Mint, Molly Malones, House of Blues and The Viper Room where she is a resident musician. With each performance, her following gets stronger and the gigs become more frequent—apparently, once you’ve seen Meg it’s hard to stay away.

Do you feel it? ‘Cause we do. Excitement for Meg Todd is growing.
