Electric Red / Bio

David Dovo’s Electric Red skillfully weaves ambient guitar loops, driving bass lines, jazz infected drums, and spoken word into funky cinematic sound-scapes that shake your body and move your mind. A composer and bass player, David also brings his background as a sound engineer to the production table allowing him to seamlessly integrate the eclectic influences in Electric Red. In his hands, spoken word pulled from vintage films cuts subversively through the deep pockets of Electric Red’s grooves, relentless bass lines hold steady against improvised guitar lines and loops, and live drums and electronic beats create layered polyrhythms. This is thinking music for people who get down. This is groove for the heady set. This is BassmentSpace, a new genre born of the pleasures of contrast and contradiction.
In live shows, Electric Red brings various video artists and VJ’s to share the stage and expand the experience. Live video sampling compliments the interplay and improvisation of the musicians, and calls up the idea of musical performance as an art event that was explored by bands like Funkadelic and Pink Floyd.
In Electric Red, David has cast himself as the musical mastermind and his audience as his co-conspirators in this subversive musical (and live multi-media) adventure.
David has consistently added to the pulse of New York’s musical and social heartbeat. He has been a previous guest on Air America Radio, appearing on Chuck D’s highly praised live talk show. David composed the original film score for “Art and Apathy”, an official selection of the prestigious Cannes & Tribeca Film Festivals. David Dovo’s diverse talent has led him to create remixes for rap pioneers Public Enemy and work with such acclaimed jazz artists as saxophonist Daniel Carter. He has shared the stage and/or collaborated with legendary producer Hank Shocklee,The Mad Professor,Billy Martin of Medeski,Martin and Wood, The Stanton Moore Trio, Chuck Mangione,Dub Trio & Hip-Hop revolutionaries The Last Poets. Collectively, the members of Electric Red have collaborated with a series of diverse artists including Gloria Estefan, Patty Smyth's Scandal, Will Lee, Sun Ra, Karl Berger, Bernie Worrell, Butch Morris, DJ Logic, Vernon Reid & Cecil Taylor. Together, this collection of prolific musicians create an intense listening experience that rivals any sound to come out of the music scene in recent memory. Electric Red invites you to be a part of the evolution of sound known as Bassment Space.
