If Rakim and MC Lyte had a baby, Nu Dekades (NU10) would be its name. This dynamic dyad, comprised of 360 degree artists/activists RyanNicole and K.E.V. (Kickin’ Every Verse), is the balm in these dry times of pop iconography and narcissism.
Born in Oakland, CA in midst of epic phenomena like the Reagan Era, crack epidemic, the golden age of hip hop, and the last surviving vestiges of the Black Power Movement, the NU10 crew brings forth an aesthetic authentic to its upbringing. Intelligent, intense, analytic, and soulful, they are rich with wisdom that exceeds their collective youth, proving Generation Y to be insightful and invested.
The NU10 duo was educated at San Francisco State and San Diego State Universities, respectively. Together, they studied political science, sociology and business, which lends to the keen analyses, decadent lyricism, and orientation towards solutions apparent in their music.
NU10 has been creating music and performing since 2007 in their hometown as well as abroad. They have blessed hundreds of international stages with artists such as Slum Village, DJ Quik, Camp Lo, ?uestlove, Dwele, Floetry, MURS and Goapele.
NU10's releases and debut album ERAgance can be found on http://nudekades.bandcamp.com. Their latest release is a project entitled NEXUS. It is a vow of love. As they state it:
"This is a love song...to our people...people of the African diaspora experiencing life in the context of color...be it beautiful or tragic.
NEXUS claims our collective place in the center...the center of creation...of mankind...of innovation, art, culture, and conversation."
Individually, RyanNicole & K.E.V. can boast to having several compilations and features, including RyanNicole's FREE Mixtape "Dis'onance" available on http://ryannicole.bandcamp.com.
Nu Dekades is a group representing and keenly observant of time itself; the inevitable changes it brings about in human beings, our infrastructures, power dynamics and cultural norms...Nu Dekades are social anthropologists for hip hop, at minimum, lyrical griots at times, and at their best: human beings with a common story to tell. Current, yet timeless, Nu Dekades is instant vintage.
