Susan Levine / Bio
Singer-songwriter Susan Levine draws inspiration from a life full of contrasts. She has been an itinerant performer, a student at Harvard, an actress in New York, a waitress in Santa Fe, a music therapist, and most recently, a mother. Her songs chronicle the emotional and physical landscapes of the in-between – the haves and have-nots, the loved and the abandoned, the sad but hopeful. A finalist in the 2008 Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Competition, a 2008 Tri-Centric Showcase Artist at the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance Conference, and a finalist in the 2005 International Songwriting Competition, the 2004 Rocky Mountain Folks Fest, the 2004 Rose Garden Coffeehouse Performing Songwriter Competition, and the 2002 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Emerging Artist Competition, she is described by Marilyn Rea Beyer (WUMB Folk Radio) as 殿 smart writer with a warm voice that can send chills down your spine.”
Susan's songs are unique and memorable blends of folk, pop, Americana and country, suffused with poetic vision and sung with a distinctive voice described by Richard Fox, of WCUW FM, as "flowing and expressive, powerful yet capable of wrapping you up with warmth and tenderness." This voice, completely her own, yet often likened in its range and flexibility to Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton and Nanci Griffith, causes audiences to take notice; the poetry and heart in her lyrics, and the emotional investment in her performances cause audiences to really listen and come back for more.
Susan's 2nd cd, Atlas (2007), produced and recorded by Tom Eaton at Thomas Eaton Recording, Newburyport, MA, was lauded by the Boston Herald: "Introspective, melodic folk-pop simply doesn稚 get much finer than the new CD by Newburyport痴 Levine. That rare album where a whole mind and heart is revealed."
