Sonya McGuire is a preachers’ daughter who learned to sing, act and appreciate music at a very early age. Music played such a dominant role in the home, Sonya had no choice but to follow the unofficial “family business". Sonya chose drums to express her musical creativity and talent.
She later developed a love for singing and directing, quickly becoming the obvious choice for musical director at her father’s church. Thus her God-given skills took her from behind the drums to the forefront of the music ministry. The experience gained from collaborating with other artists and choirs in the metro-Atlanta area, she co-founded the group Agape. Sonya's vocal and leadership abilities were honed during a successful two-year period with the group.
Sonya’s unique ministry and style of praise and worship ultimately transitioned from Agape to the revolutionary gospel singing force, God's Own. While with God's Own, Sonya traveled the eastern seaboard electrifying audiences, offering them an "original" praise and worship experience.
Equipped with vocal ability that is comparable to none and marveled by many, Sonya incorporates thought provoking lyrics with unmistakable jazz overtones into her music. Her organic songwriting and ability to blend soul, traditional gospel, jazz, funk, praise and worship has caught the attention of many music legends and record executives. Her gift has made room for her to share the stage with and opened up for such artists such as Tye Tribett, Donnie McClurkin, Dorinda Clark-Cole, Kim Burrell, Marvin Sapp, Marcus Cole, Natalie Wilson and the Sounds of Praise Chorale, Rizen, Nancy Jackson, Angela Spivey, Youthful Praise, Mary Mary, Eugene Cole and Purpose, Crystal Rucker, Benard Johnson, Twinkie Clark-Terrell, Canton Jones, The Georgia Mass Choir, Karen Clark-Sheard, Israel Houghton and New Breed, Beverly Crawford, Timothy Wright, Douglas Miller and Shae Norman.
She has also performed at multiple NAACP events. Sonya was also selected to sing back up for Universal Recording Artist, Mariah Carey, during an inspirational selection at the 2003 NBA All Star Game in Atlanta, Georgia. Sonya dazzled the audience at Ricky Dillard and New Generation's CD release "Unplugged...the way church used to be" with two songs from her solo project, "Journey" released in 2009). In December 2005, Sonya's music ministry spread internationally as she ministered during a twenty-one day tour of Europe including such places as Italy, Milan, France and nearly twenty additional cities. She’s also ministered in 18 cities in Asia, from Japan to Malaysia. The presence of God was prevalent during the concerts which evolved into worship and praise services. Sonya McGuire can be described in one word, anointed. She is truly a multi-gifted individual. She is a gospel recording artist, songwriter, and musician with ministry at the heart of all she does.

Sonya's passion for music and self-mission to win souls for Christ is at the heart of her ministry and transcends racial, cultural, and even language barriers. In 2005, Sonya's music ministry spread internationally as she was commissioned to deliver several concerts during a twenty-one day European tour. The presence of God was so prevalent during her performances that they became much more than just a concert, they evolved into worship & unbelievable praise experiences. She has also ministered in 18 cities in Asia, from Japan to Malaysia with plans to expand wider. As a result, Sonya has toured annually & has released a European Christmas DVD of her ministry overseas.
Sonya has received numerous awards and nominations including Best New Female Artist at the 2008 YGEA Awards, Best New Artist at the 2008 Gospel Choice Awards and 2009 Stellar Awards, Best Female Singer for the 2010, 2011, and 2012 Gospel Choice Awards, Best Urban Contemporary Solo Artist and Best Rhythm & Praise Solo Artist for the 2013- 2014 Prayze Factor People Choice Awards. With all her accomplishments, she is yet a faithful servant in her community. Sonya is the founder of four nonprofit organizations including: Sister, Soul & Psalms, an organization that empowers women of the arts; Psalms of Thanks, which serves as a vehicle that provides food, and clothes to those individuals that are less fortunate, Project Think, an adolescent and teen empowerment movement, and Blessed to be a Blessing, serving the community, meeting their needs and empowering families.
Sonya has experienced monumental success with her chart topping first project "My Journey” and is currently working on her sophomore album “The Next Chapter" to be released in Fall of 2014.
With all her accomplishments, she is yet a faithful servant in her community and is licensed as a national evangelist. Sonya continues to share her gift within the Body of Christ, conducting choir workshops, Praise and Worship conferences and music seminars throughout the US.
