Lyceum was founded in early 2010 by the former members of three previous Bay Area metal bands and is currently writing towards their first album. The name refers to the academy of Aristotle, the teacher of Alexander the Great, dedicated to Apollo Lyceus, pivotal in the history of western learning and philosophy. The five songs written since the 2010 demo (recorded by Vincent Wojno, producer of Testament, Machine Head, High on Fire, Kreator, and Death Angel) have developed around concepts of heroism, conflict, corruption, and empire, following a story written by the band. The band does not see itself in dialogue so much with the metal community as with music, cinema, and art throughout history, combining a range of emotions using the devices of metal. Lyceum’s members have combined show experience playing with Deicide, All Shall Perish, Embryonic Devourment, Testament, Death Angel, Vital Remains, Dragonlord, 3 Inches of Blood, Goatwhore,God Forbid, Mnemic, and Pungent Stench.
