OffAxis (formerly AFU)formed in the summer of 2010 for an outdoor charity gig pulling in Stuart Bellamy from musical retirement to help steer an earlier band. After this, changes in line up occoured with Andy Roberts persuaded out of musical obscurity, who played along side Stu during the late 80s in labyrinth (the real one)!
OffAxis originally played a mix of covers played with a twist together with original material fusing funk, modern music, jazz and rock. After these line up changes had been fully cemented, the direction of AFU became fully towards original material as Stuart and keyboard player Glen had been actively composing during the later stages of inactivity within the music scene, sometimes individually and on occasions in collaboration as cryptasonic.
The introduction of Andy added further dimension to the material. The addition of new percussionist Barrie Roberts coincided with the name change to OffAxis and the ethos of the band is "if your songs are great enough you dont need loads of covers" and that this defines real developing artists.
OffAxis have now built up a 30+ song set of original material and with plenty of work in progress we are gigging again. As a team we continue to challenge ourselves to play what we enjoy and enjoy what we play. Equally as important is a relaxed attitude to musical genre -any outputs are a mixture of our collective influences.
