John Rankin began his musical journey at four years old, studying the Suzuki Method for classical violin at Marylhurst College with Sister Jeanette Wood. He has played violin with the Metropolitan Youth Symphony and the Rainier Chamber Orchestra, co-founded the Orpheus String Quartet, performed at Benaroya Hall in Seattle and the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland, and played with local greats such as Michael Allen Harrison and Aaron Meyer. At age sixteen he found a guitar in his parent’s basement, taught himself to play and fell in love with musical composition. His fascination with blending different styles of music led him to develop his unique style of rhythmic nylon string guitar playing, which he calls “rhythm rock." His original compositions include over 100 songs in a variety of musical styles: acoustic rock, blues, punk, hip hop, classical, metal, flamenco and folk. His lyrics are thoughtful, catchy and honest, reflecting the soulful message that life’s journey is always worth it.
