Born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Yodie is the baby in a
family with ten kids. Starting ballet and tap classes at the age of
three, Yodie’s love of dance encouraged her fascination with rhythm
and musical forms. As she got older, Yodie began creating her own
dance routines and incorporating short raps with the movements in the
style of those artists she admired: Exscape, Jodeci, Envogue, TLC, and
Another Bad Creation, to name a few.
As a teen, Yodie endured personal tragedy and found music as a way to
pull herself from a place of victimization to one of power. Having
her first child at age 16 forced her to grow up fast, temporarily
trading in her dreams for diapers, but that ember of desire was never
totally extinguished. Straight out of high school she began a career
with a local school district while attending night classes in pursuit
of a degree in business management. The school year was spent working
as a teacher’s aide, secretary, attendance officer, and WIA mentor,
while during the summers she operated her own daycare, styled hair,
and helped individuals with their taxes.
By 2010 Yodie was ready to reunite with her first love, music. With a
leap of faith she decided give up the safety of routine and trade it
for a more creative life by returning to songwriting. She began to
rap and in her lyrics found a flow that turned into a torrent. She
hit the scene at the end of 2010 as one-half of the R&B/rap duo Yodie
n’ Chelly P., after which she struck out alone and could be found
performing in all the hottest clubs in town. Her first single, “Call
Me Mrs. Jiggles,” was released in July 2011 and was promptly followed
by her first mixtape, “It’s Yodie, Bitches” in October, accompanied by
videos for “Jiggles” and “HAM.”
March of 2012 saw Yodie release her first EP titled after her successful single.
