James Neal was born on Governors Island, New York. (Brooklyn) came up in a musical family. Granddad Robert Neal Sr. played piano and guitar. Uncle Kenneth played guitar and bass and he taught him to play bass at the young age of 5. By the time he was 7, he was playing in the "Sunbeam Choir" at church. Later on, in 8th and 9th grades, he played for the stage band at Amityville Jr. High and later with the Amityville Memorial High School Stage Band and Gospel Chorus. After graduation he went into the military, the United States Marine Corps. While there, and after duty was done, his best friend was my bass. He was playing clubs on the military bases wherever he was stationed. Music became his therapy and even to this day he still loves it. He plays "all" styles of music. His "favorite is "Funk" or slap bass…my first love” followed by jazz, fusion, reggae, neosoul and progressive gospel. On a special note, he is cousin to a former member of The Blues Posse-Miss Jacqui Walker!
